Nvidia unveils the GeForce GTX 690

CNETAnalysis: At the Nvidia Game Festival 2012 in Shanghai, Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang pulled back the curtain on the GeForce GTX 690 graphics card. The company teased the GTX 690 successor earlier this week, and didn’t disappoint with the announcement of the successor to the high-end, power efficient GTX 680 . According to Nvidia, the 690 will outperform the 680 in speed, noise reduction, and (chiefly) power efficiency. However,The 690 will over-perform in price when it becomes available in select stores May 3 for a cool $1,000 (compared to the 680′s price of $650). Nvidia asserts that the cost is well worth the graphical gain. “When Nvidia set out to build the Kepler GPU architecture more than four years ago,” said James Wang of Nvidia, “our primary focus was power efficiency. We found that processors were increasingly being limited by the amount of power they could consume and dissipate. He continued, “The only way to improve perfor

In Depth: Project Glass: what you need to know

CNETAnalysis: When Google unveiled Project Glass , the tech world instantly fell into two camps. Camp one was excited: we’re living in the sci-fi future! Camp two, though, wasn’t so happy. It’s vapourware! some said, while others worried that Google just wanted to plaster ads on the entire world. Is either camp correct? Let’s find out. What is Google Glass? Google’s Project Glass is Google’s attempt to make wearable computing mainstream, and it’s effectively a smart pair of glasses with an integrated heads-up display and a battery hidden inside the frame. Wearable computing is not a new idea, but Google’s enormous bank account and can-do attitude means that Project Glass could well be the first product to do significant numbers. What’s the difference between Google Glass and Google Goggles? Google Goggles is software, an app that can search the web based on photos and scans. Google Glass is hardware. How does Google Glass work? According to well-inf

Apple iTV to snatch exclusive film streaming deals from Netflix?

CNETAnalysis: Looks like Apple may be about to nab an exclusive film streaming deal for its upcoming Apple iTV television from the incumbent Netflix. It’s not really a shocker that Apple is in talks with a company co-owned by three major film studios over exclusive streaming rights to some film and TV content. An anonymous tipster told Reuters that the cash-rich electronics company is negotiating a deal with Epix, a company backed by Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount pictures with rights to films like The Lincoln Lawyer and Rango. The metaphor broke my spleen Apparently any streaming deal reached would include both the existing Apple TV box and the upcoming Apple television set which is yet to be announced but has been the subject of many a fevered rumour. One potential spanner in Apple’s exclusive streaming works could be Epix’s longstanding agreement with Netflix , although this deal is up for renewal this September. Apple usually announces its iPod re

Apple omits Android searches from Chomp app

CNETAnalysis: While it’s hardly a surprise, Apple has removed the ability to search for Android apps from its recently-acquired Chomp service . Back in February, Cupertino snapped-up the San Francisco-based start-up, with a view to improving application search and discovery within its own App Store. SInce then, the web-based version of the service has still allowed users to search for Android applications as well as iPhone and iPad apps . Not anymore. Making the Genius smarter The Chomp application has also been removed from the Google Play store. It is still unclear what Apple plans to do with Chomp long-term, but the company will surely find a way to integrate the tech within the App Store and perhaps improve Genius recommendations.

Interview: Libre Office is taking off ‘like a rocket’

CNETAnalysis: Libre Office Michael Meeks is a long-time OpenOffice, now Libre Office, contributor and employee of Novell, now Attachmate . We caught up with him to get the inside perspective on the massive changes they, and desktop Linux as a whole, have gone through in the past few years. Linux Format: Given everything that has happened with Attachmate buying Novell, who do you now work for? Michael Meeks: Gosh, that’s a really good question. The public-facing brand would be Suse. That’s where I report in to. The company is managed as four different units. LXF: Because they split out Suse and Novell? MM: Absolutely. Novell and Suse are now separate. So, in terms of the legal ramifications of how the merger was completed, I don’t think that really matters. What matters is the entity that we are, and that is Suse. LXF: Right. We find the idea that they’ve separated Suse exciting. They’re clearly putting a lot of emphasis on that brand again. MM: Yes,

Tutorial: Get started with Messages for Mac Beta

CNETAnalysis: Get started with Messages By now you’ve no doubt heard about OS X Mountain Lion , Apple’s upcoming update to OS X Lion. Among the many new features that provide a far more iOS-like feel is Messages. This turns the humble iChat application into a more iCloud-focused messaging centre that stays in sync across all of your devices. As part of its testing of the new platform, Apple has made a beta version of Messages available as a free download for anyone to use. Of course, beta software isn’t the most robust and you may encounter some glitches, but if you want to get a taste of Mountain Lion before it arrives then this is the best way to do it. You’ll need the latest update to OS X Lion to run Messages Beta, as well as an iCloud account or an account with another messaging service such as Google Talk. To fully appreciate the benefits of Messages, however, an iCloud email address and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch are best. As long as your

Other retired officials have also criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence minister, but the censure from Yuval Diskin, who stepped down as head of the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service last year, was especially harsh. He was also unusual in using the language of religious fervor that Israelis associate with their Islamist foes. “I have no faith in the prime minister, nor in the defence minister,” Diskin said in the remarks broadcast by Israeli media on Saturday. “I really don’t have faith in a leadership that makes decisions out of messianic feelings.” Government officials rebuked Diskin and questioned his motives, implying that he had his

CNETAnalysis: A few months later than promised, Google brings maps to the world of play in an effort to promote its navigation service. Teased back in January for a February release, the Google Maps tilting game, called Cube , launched meekly under the technology radar. It was discovered by Fusible when checking in on the registered domain, and has since begun to spark a renewed interest in the far-reaching capabilities of Google’s maps services. The game spans eight levels which take intrigued navigators from Paris to San Francisco to Japan to the interior of Mall of America. Players roll through each of these locales as a blue ball (signifying humanity) on a tilting cube, finding paths through traffic, shifting landscapes, and London’s infamous subway system. India holds talks over fuel exports to Pakistan

CNewsworld.com: India holds talks over fuel exports to Pakistan NEW DELHI: India has held talks over exporting refined fuels to its neighbour Pakistan, the head of Hindustan Mittal Energy said on Saturday, at the opening of the company’s new refinery close to the border between the two countries. Moves to stimulate trade flows and liberalise restricted investment rules have emerged as the key driver of peace efforts between the neighbours, whose fragile ties were shattered when Pakistani militants attacked the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008. “There were government-to-government discussions. A delegation from Pakistan came but nothing has been finalised,” said S. Roy Choudhury, chairman of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) (HPCL.NS) and Hindustan Mittal Energy. “Any decision has to make economic sense,” he added. Pakistan said last month it was close to removing petrol from a list of banned imports from India. It allowed diesel imports in 2009, but no Indian suppl

In Depth: A week in Minecraft: a game or a way of life?

CNETAnalysis: A week in Minecraft Less a game and more a way of life, Minecraft is all about digging, building, exploring and crafting in a gigantic world. This world is made up of blocks – soil, sand, stone, and many other materials – and you have complete freedom to build structures using these blocks in an area that’s eight times the size of the world’s surface. The game keeps track of every single change you make (which produces massive save game files – 100MB upwards is the norm). By combining items, you can make new things, such as the wool-and-wood combination we tried, which made a bed. Minecraft has two game modes: Survival – where you have to eat and protect yourself from monsters, and Creative – where you can work safely on huge buildings to your heart’s content. The game is written in Java and runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS, and has already reached a whopping four million sales. So we decided to spend a week checking it out… Day 1: Ar

New iPad Mini release date, news and rumours

CNETAnalysis: The new iPad has been and gone, sporting a chunkier and heavier build than the iPad 2 , which left some wondering: what’s with all the extra weight? However, it looks like Apple may be about to aid those conscious of extra grams in their bags, as rumours hot up about a potential iPad mini (or iPad nano, if you prefer) arriving later this year. As the Amazon Kindle Fire steals the budget tablet show and with more small, cheap tablets on the horizon, such as the Google Nexus tablet , Apple may well want a bite of the, well, apple. Back in 2010, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that smaller screened tablets were not “sufficient to create great tablet apps” and would be “dead on arrival”, so rumours suggesting a new iPad mini is in the works reveals a potentially new direction for the firm in its post-Jobs era. Believe it or not, there’s certainly a lot of chat surrounding the iPad mini, so we’ve scooped it all up, mushed it all together a

Apple security ’10 years behind Microsoft,’ says Kapersky boss

CNETAnalysis: Mac OS X users will come under increasing threats from malicious software, as Apple’s market share continues to rise, according to a leading security firm. Following the recent Flashback scare, which infested over 600,000 Macs , Eugene Kapersky, founder and CEO of Kapersky, says cyber criminals will continue to target Mac users. Furthermore, Kapersky reckons that Mac OS X, for so long considered virus-proof, is actually more susceptible to infection than Windows. ‘No difference between Mac and Windows’ He says because Microsoft has built up years of experience in tackling viruses, Trojans and other malware through software patches, it has a distinct advantage. He said: “I think they (Apple) are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security. For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. “(It’s) just a question of time and market share. Cyber criminals have now re
