Short of luck again: iMessage, FaceTime slapped with second outage

CNETAnalysis: It appears that Apple’s iMessages and FaceTime outage earlier this week was not an isolated incident, as Apple users had no doubt hoped. The messaging and video chat networks went down again for some users this morning. Tuesday’s iMessage and FaceTime outage lasted more than five hours and affected users on both iOS and Mac OS X seemingly on a global scale. Today’s service interruption was really more of a hiccup, lasting little over one hour according to Apple, though CNET reported that it was actually closer to two. Does it really matter? One of the things that attracts everyday consumers to Apple is the company’s reliability. If there’s an issue with a product or service, Apple is normally quick to help, and the “geniuses” in Apple stores can solve most problems with a quick visit. Anything that tarnishes that image can’t do Apple any good. Granted, the lack of iMessages this morning an...

Buying Guide: 6 best phonics apps for iPad: teach kids to read, write and spell

CNETAnalysis: Phonics is the primary way in which children learn basic literacy at schools in England and Wales. Phonics is all about the sounds that each letter, and letter combination, makes. These sounds are identified and manipulated into letters and words. Phonics is widely regarded as the quickest and most effective way of teaching young children to read, write and spell – plus, it’s enjoyable to boot. Thanks to the intuitive nature of the iPad, it’s a great way to introduce your children to learning, and there are hundreds of great educational tools in the App Store. In this roundup, we’ll be looking at six of the best phonics apps, primarily aimed at children aged from three to six years. Words that you’ll come across in phonics include the likes of phonemes and graphemes. These can be intimidating to the uninitiated, but – for the main – they can essentially be viewed as the simplest building blocks ...

Nexus 5 vs. Motorola X Phone – Anticipating features and specs

CNET Analysis: There’s been a lot of speculation in regards to two upcoming Android phones, which will more than likely run Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. We know that it’s almost a certainty the Motorola X Phone will happen, we just do not know when, although this is a very different story for the Nexus 5, as this handset has not even been hinted by Google yet. Google will find themselves in a very strange place with both these handsets, because on one hand they have always favored a Nexus device, but on the other they have a vested interest in Motorola and the X Phone. Although, we have to remember that these should have different release dates, if the Nexus 5 is to happen that is. Having said that, this has not stopped people from anticipating Nexus 5 and Motorola X features and specs, as if we are to believe the rumors then these will be two handsets with some very outstanding hardware, but which of the two will have the edge? We’ve alread...

Mark Zuckerberg makes credible acting debut in Facebook Home ad

CNETAnalysis: Social networking overlord Mark Zuckerberg has taken centre state in a relatively humorous new video promoting the merits of the new Facebook Home suite. In his acting debut, the Facebook CEO explains the importance of the launch to his employees, but they aren’t really paying attention because, you guessed it, they’re too busy using Facebook Home. During Zuckerberg’s pep-talk one employee in particular is distracted by his pals’ squash match, go-karting and pool party shenanigans, while the now-infamous screaming goat also makes an appearance. Facebook released the viral video to celebrate the custom Android UI’s appearance on the Google Play store for select devices on Friday. YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArFy91n1FR0 Zuck’s performance has already gleaned good reviews with over 50,000 likes on the site, with 15,000 shares since it was posted late on Friday. The same can’t exactly be sa...

Buying Guide: Best CPU: 10 top processors reviewed and rated

CNETAnalysis: Introduction This is it, boys and girls. We’re nearing the end of days for the PC processor as we know it. There are storms of change on the horizon and it’s anyone’s guess what the PC will be like in hardware terms when it blows over. Right now, things are much as they’ve always been. You pays your money, you takes your choice. In other words, you get to choose any CPU you like and match it with a motherboard and a graphics card. You’ve got both AMD and Intel options. And in many cases, you’ve still got full control over the chip you buy. You can overclock it, underclock it, swap it out and generally mess about with it. Trust us on this – much of that could begin to disappear within the next 18 months, so enjoy it while it lasts. If you’re wondering why, there are a number of trends at work. Firstly, AMD’s position is pretty precarious. We’ll come to that in more detail later, but...
