238 abducted security personnel released: sources
PESHAWAR: As many as 238 security men, who were abducted from South Waziristan, have been released on Sunday.According to the sources, these security men have been released after more than two months after they were abducted from South Waziristan.Talking to Geo News, senior analyst on Afghan affairs Raheemullah Yousufzai said the release was made possible under the exchange plan of prisoners with Taliban after Jirga, as at least 29 local Taliban were released in return for these security personnel.
Various arrested; raids underway to arrest lawyers, political leaders
KARACHI: The spell of raids on the houses of political leaders and lawyers continued today to be conducted here.Police arrested Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) President Abrar Hasan.According to SHCBA General Secretary Muneerur Rehman, Abrar Hasan has been sent to the Central Jail Karachi for 90 days.According to the police sources, Malir Bar Association President Zahoor Mehr was also arrested.It should also be mentioned that the raids are being conducted to arrest Rasheed Rizwi, Muneer Malik, Salahud Din Gandapur, Yaseen Azad and Naeem Qureshi and other political leaders including Nasurllah Shajee, Mohammed Hussain Mehanti and Younis Barai.
More four SHC judges take oath under PCO
KARACHI: As many as four judges of Sindh High Court took oath under PCO on Sunday.After this, the number of the judges of Sindh High Court who took oath under PCO rose to eight out of total 27 SHC judges.According to the sources, these judges include Justice Nadeem Azhar Siddiqui, Justice Ali Saeen Dino, Justice Mehmood Alam and Justice Azizullah Memon.The oath taking ceremony was held at Governor House, here. It is however learnt that more SHC judges are expected to take oath as well.
Three more judges of PHC take oath under PCO
PESHAWAR: Three more judges of Peshawar High Court took oath under PCO on Sunday.The judges include Justice Jahanzeb Raheem, Justice Raj Mohammed Khan and Justice Mohammed Raza Khan.PHC Chief Justice Talat Qayyum Qureshi administered the oath to these judges. After this, the number of the judges who took oath under PCO rose to nine.Yesterday, Justice Qaim Jan, Justice Ijazul Hasan, Justice Saleem Khan, Justice Maroof Khan and Justice H amid Farooq Durrani were sworn in under new PCO.
Pakistan parliament can delay elections for a year: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Sunday that parliament is entitled to delay elections for a year under a state of emergency, but added that the government had not yet made a decision. He said this while addressing a news conference in Islamabad."There could be some timing difference on the election schedule but we have not decided yet." Aziz said when asked about general elections that were due in January. "We are still deliberating. In an emergency the parliament could give itself one year."The assemblies are completing their term on November 15; however, according to the constitution, the assemblies could give themselves some more time in view of the extraordinary circumstances of the country.Commenting on whether it is martial law or emergency, he denied the state being martial law, adding that the print media is functioning as before; however, there is code conduct for the media to follow.Commenting on a question regarding whether the President Musharraf would doff off his uniform after being sworn in as the president, Shaukat Aziz said that the matter is in the court.Shaukat Aziz said Pakistan is a responsible country and the region around is facing great many challenges to Pakistan; accordingly, in view of such factors, the emergency was announced and constitution was held in abeyance; however, the Prime Minister, chief ministers, the cabinet and the executive will continue to function as before."There have been 400 to 500 preventative arrests in the country," Aziz told, giving the first confirmed figure since Musharraf announced the emergency on Saturday. The arrested activists include Javed Hashmi, acting chief of former premier Nawaz Sharif's party, leading rights activist Asma Jahangir and cricket legend-turned-politician Imran Khan. The prime minister said the government was "committed to pursuing a parliamentary form of government" and added that he wanted the emergency to be over "without too much time being taken." Shaukat Aziz said that it is because of this government that media boom is being witnessed and 50 channels are being run in the country; however, it is the desire the government that the code of conduct should be followed.Media is not allowed to ridicule or malign anyone; however, the positive criticism on these channel is most welcome, Aziz said.
Various lawyers including Qaisar Rasheed arrested in Peshawar
PESHAWAR: Peshawar police arrested Sunday several lawyers including NWFP Bar Council member Qaisar Rasheed.According to the sources, the Peshawar police arrested these men from their houses.There are reports that the lawyer Khurshid Khan, who threw black colour on to the face of Ahmed Raza Kasuri, has also been put behind bars. The lawyers have been sent to jail.
25 Taliban killed in deadly Afghanistan clashes
KABUL: Afghan and international security forces killed 25 Taliban in an area of southern Afghanistan that has witnessed days of deadly clashes, officials said Sunday. The 25 were killed Saturday in an operation by Afghan police and soldiers from the US-led coalition in the troubled province of Uruzgan, the interior ministry said in a statement. "The bodies of the dead were left at the battlefield," it said, adding that a Taliban commander was seriously hurt. The operation was in a district next to some of the most volatile parts of southern Afghanistan, a focus of a bloody Taliban-led campaign launched soon after the extremists were removed from government six years ago.
Six women burnt alive in house fire in Kashmir
MUZAFFARABAD: Two women and four minor girls were burnt alive when a house caught fire in Neelum Valley on the night between Saturday and Sunday. The fire broke out in the house of one Mohammad Hussain in Tahjiyan area in Neelum Valley. It engulfed the house rapidly and burnt two women and four minor girls alive.
Elections amid all other matters gone into abeyance: Tariq Azeem
ISLAMABAD: Federal State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Tariq Azeem has said that all other matters including elections have gone into abeyance.In an interview, he said, schedule for parliamentary elections due in January may be "adjusted" after a state of emergency."Elections will be held but the dates may be adjusted because of emergency rule in the country," Deputy Information Minister Tariq Azeem said. "Nothing is certain at the moment."
Several political leaders, lawyers arrested
ISLAMABAD: Several political leaders have been arrested in various parts of country in the wake of declaration of emergency in the country.Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Khawaja Asif of Pakistan Muslim Legaue (N) and nationalist opposition leaders Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Qadir Magsi have also been arrested, the reports said.The acting president of Pakistan Muslim League (N) was arrested in Multan. Former ISI chief Lt General (Retd) Hamid Gul also included among those who have been arrested.The president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Aitzaz Ahsan, and other legal leaders including Munir A. Malik, Ali Ahmad Kurd and Tariq Mehmood were also taken into custody immediately after emergency rule was imposed. The police also picked up five lawyers from southwestern Quetta.The number of arrests is likely to increase as police continue raids on residences of several other political leaders in different cities.
