The new Xperia X10 is the first Android-based Sony Ericsson device and is now available for developers to test on the Perfecto Mobile Handset Cloud.
Chris Ziegler from Engadget noted that the Xperia X10 is based just on the Android 1.6. He adds, however, that Sony Ericsson wisely committed to update the phone on an ongoing basis.
He also expressed disappointment with the keyboard input performance, since the “back button” “deletes everything in your current text field” instead of just single letters one by one. Further he experienced missed inputs when pressing letters while they still popped up at the screen which “makes entering almost any text a maddening procedure”.
On a positive note he mentioned that the 8.1 megapixel camera represents “the highest resolution camera you can find on an Android phone today” and that the picture quality is excellent.
Gareth Beavis from TechRadar pointed out that the two main selling points of the Xperia X10 are the Timescape and the Mediascape overlay .Timescape overlay enables users to “combine all notifications, missed calls and social network updates into one 'spine'” while Mediascape overlay let you either “see all media files grouped together in one scrollable list or flick left and right to see the information separately.”
This was confronted by a reviewer in CNET who noted that "Timescape isn't much worth your time”. Further there is no “direct option for importing your contacts from social media services and e-mail accounts outside of Gmail” and direct Outlook calendar, notes and contacts syncing are not supported.
Overall, commentators agree that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 offers a slick, user-friendly design with a solid feature set and good call quality, but that data performance might be uneven and that the Timescape overlay application and keyboard miss some details.
