Awaz Apni :HC dismisses petition against Amitabh Bachchan

Awaz Apni Report: (Maryum Razzaq)

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed a appeal filed by an NGO against actor Amitabh Bachchan accusing him of violating anti-tobacco law. Justice Nelson Britto dismissed the appeal filed by National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE), an anti-tobacco group which had moved the court against the megastar and three others. NOTE had objected to the roadside hoardings on Margao-Mapusa national highway which showed the actor smoking a cigar.

The hoardings, displaying a still picture from the film Family, were put up in Goa from December 25, 2005 to January 1, 2006.The NGO had protested against these hoardings showing Bachchan smoking a cigar and endorsing Anchor Daewoo's electronic appliances. The NGO had claimed that hoardings were violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, and section 7 of Goa Prohibitory Smoking and Spitting Act, 1997.

A case was also filed with local police against Keshu Ramsay, producer of the film Family and M/s DMS film pvt Limited. In March 2008, Sessions Judge UV Bakre had quashed lawful proceedings against Bachchan and others, following which NOTE moved the High court.NOTE General Secretary Shekhar Salkar said the NGO will challenge the High Court order in the Supreme Court.

In Depth: Could robots be the writers of the future?

CNETAnalysis: It might be concerned with aliens, outer space and dimensional jumping for now, but ‘sci-fi’ might have to be redefined if the latest advances in automated writing continue apace. Software that can construct sentences, analyse data and even put a ‘spin’ on a news story are threatening to make the newsdesk and the author’s writing room very different places. The end for journalists? Journalism isn’t complicated. The popularity of online news stories can be tracked – and therefore the importance of news easily ranked – while almost everything is written using the inverted pyramid structure . Since automated writing software can already do most of that, are we looking at the last generation of human journalists? Narrative Science’s Quill is the leading automated writing software title. It transforms structured data into readable, plain English stories that are identical to those written by humans, ...
