Exclusive: Asus: Windows 7 is a tablet-friendly OS

CNETAnalysis: Asus has insisted that it is committed to building Windows 7 tablets and sees the Microsoft OS as a worthy competitor to Android and Apple’s iOS. Asus’ Julie Cheng told TechRadar at the UK launch of the Eee Pad Transformer in London this week that the company gets ‘a lot’ of enquiries from people who don’t want Apple or Android. While many people, including writers on this site, have given Windows 7 a bit of a kicking as a touch OS in recent times, Asus told TechRadar that there is a demand for Windows 7 tablets and that it will continue to make them while that demand exists, no matter what. “We’re making Windows 7 tablets because we still get a lot of enquiries from corporate and end users who are just used to Windows,” said Cheng, product management specialist at Asus. “They don’t want Apple and they don’t want Android because they just simply want Windows – they’re used to it. There are still demands for Windows solutions.” Asus’ first major

LG claims market leadership in LCD monitors

CNETAnalysis: LG has declared that it is now the world’s market leader in LCD monitors, and indicated that it will now focus heavily on Cinema 3D monitors going forward DisplaySearch figures suggest that the Korean giant has taken an 18 per cent share of the global market for LCD monitors. LG apparently provided 2.92 million of the 16.68 monitors sold around the world in 2010. Strong endorsement “This represents a strong endorsement of LG’s drive to increase investment in R&D over the last 12 months,” said Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “The reason for our success is simple: We’ve focused on listening to our customers and then innovating around those needs. “To keep on growing our market share, we’re going to be moving strongly into CINEMA 3D monitors in the near future.” LG is hoping that its IPS panels – which stands for In-Plane Switching – and Cinema 3D monitors will push them up to 20 per cent

Japan radioactivity found in UK

CNet Analysis LONDON: Extremely low levels of radioactive iodine from the tsunami-hit Japanese nuclear plant have been detected in parts of the UK. A statement from the Health Protection Agency said the “minutest traces of iodine” were being seen in the UK, with low levels detected at monitoring stations in Oxfordshire and Glasgow The agency said there was no public health risk posed by the iodine, as the radiation dose received from inhaling air with the levels recorded in the past few days would be minuscule and much less than the annual background dose. While levels may rise in the coming days and weeks, they will be “significantly below any level which could cause harm to public health”, the HPA said. The statement comes after the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said an air sampler in Glasgow had picked up iodine particles which they believe could be from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. The HPA said that trace levels of the radioactive chem

Libya flays coalition support for rebels

CNet Analysis TRIPOLI: Officials of Libya”s embattled regime on Wednesday condemned what they said was the coalition forces” support for rebel forces trying to drive Moamer Kadhafi from power. Coalition warplanes were effectively supplying the rebel forces with air cover as they tried to push westward, said a foreign ministry statement. The ministry “deplores the hostile action of the countries of the Western coalition, which is supplying support to the armed gangs of Al-Qaeda in the region east of Libya by means of air raids to facilitate the advance of these gangs towards Ras Lanouf and Brega.” This “support, in a sovereign country and United Nations member is contrary to the international laws and norms regulating relations between states,” the statement added. Coalition air strikes against forces loyal to Kadhafi have allowed rebel forces to advance west from the eastern stronghold of Benghazi, recapturing in recent days the towns of Ajdabiya, Brega and Ras Lan

Flagship Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 arrives

CNETAnalysis: The flagship Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 has been launched – but whether it tops AMD’s Radeon HD 6990 to take the fastest graphics card crown is still up for discussion. In TechRadar’s Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 review the latest card and the AMD Radeon HD 6990 trade blows going from test to test. In some the Nvidia card holds sway and in others it’s the AMD card that’s the winner. Suffice to say they’re both as good as each other. Time to tweak Which is a shame considering Nvidia had a bit of time to tweak its own offering in the time since the Radeon HD 6990 was released a couple of weeks ago. The GeForce GTX 590 houses two of the best GPUs Nvidia has ever created, the GF 110. That’s two of the GPUs that sit in its flagship GeForce GTX 580 card. That’s a not inconsiderable feat, especially considering it runs both quieter and cooler than the competing dual-GPU card from AMD, the Radeon HD 6990. It’s also smaller than AMD’s monstrous monolith of a card.

Tutorial: How to overclock the GTX 570

CNETAnalysis: The Nvidia GTX 570 is a graphics card that seems to balance price and performance perfectly. We love it, and you should too. While you may want the GTX 580 , it’s unlikely you’ll want to hand over almost £400 to own its three billion transistors, 1.5GB of memory and chunky 512 shader processors running at 772MHz. The smart money should be falling on the GTX 570. Here’s a card offering up to 80 per cent of the performance for two-thirds of the price. You still get your three billion transistors, and the best part of 1.3GB of memory, but it’s the loss of a single Stream Multi-processor that’s the real cost, producing a 480-shader GPU. But the drop in core speed to 732MHz is less of a worry, as we’ll see! The main dilemma is that there are still a few bargain-priced GTX 480 cards around – at the time of writing Scan.co.uk has the GTX 480 for a mere £155. However, the reduced noise levels and lower power-consumption of the newer card tip the balance

Gary Marshall: Amazon vs Apple for the future of entertainment

CNETAnalysis: So much for Apple’s much-rumoured, cloud-based music service: Amazon’s beaten it to the punch with Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web and Cloud Player for Android. Apple’s own iTunes cloud service is expected later this year. We know that Google’s currently using Google Music internally , so a release of that must be imminent. Spotify’s been streaming music forever. And Microsoft… Where the hell is Microsoft? I’m beginning to think Microsoft has given up on home entertainment, Xbox games aside. Microsoft already has a digital locker in the form of Windows Live SkyDrive – 25GB of space for photos, videos and documents for free – but nobody seems to have thought “hey! This would be ace for music!” Let’s face it, all that Amazon’s really offering here is a bit of free storage and a media player. Microsoft could bash that out in a tea break. There appears to be a bit of a problem with the vision thing. Maybe Microsoft needs someone who can tell which

NATO to take Libya command on Wednesday: Obama

CNet Analysis WASHINGTON: NATO will take command of all coalition military operations in Libya on Wednesday, US President Barack Obama said Monday in a nationally televised address to the American people. Attempting to convince a war-weary public about his decision to intervene in Libya, Obama vowed also that the US military would reduce its own involvement as allies step up to bear the brunt of the operations. “In that effort, the United States will play a supporting role — including intelligence, logistical support, search and rescue assistance, and capabilities to jam regime communications,” he said. “Because of this transition to a broader, NATO-based coalition, the risk and cost of this operation — to our military, and to American taxpayers — will be reduced significantly.” Obama confirmed news out of Brussels on Sunday that NATO ambassadors had agreed that the military alliance would take command of all military operations, including air strikes on Moamer Ka

Week in Tech: iPad 2 has arrived – but should you buy one?

CNETAnalysis: There’s only one story in tech this week: the iPad 2 , which comes to the UK later today (or in a few week’s time, if you’ve ordered one online already). You can buy one in the flesh from 5pm today, and there are lots and lots of iPad 2s going into Orange shops . Will there be queues? You bet – and Motorola has been quick to harness the hype to promote its own tablet, the Xoom. “Not keen to waste the finest weather we’ve had in ages waiting in a queue?” Motorola asks . “Fear not friends, ditch the winter coat, head out for a pint and pre-order your Motorola Xoom online instead!” Are we the only people wondering whether “hey! Don’t buy their popular gadget! Buy our considerably less popular one instead!” is the smartest marketing strategy? So is the iPad 2 worth the hype? Gary Marshall predicted that some would whinge – “it isn’t the entirely imaginary device the internet has been happily inventing for the last few months” – but our in-depth iPad

Asus Eee Pad Transformer UK release date announced

CNETAnalysis: The Asus Eee Pad Transformer UK release date has been announced by the Taiwanese giant, with the company’s first Android Honeycomb tablet/laptop hybrid arriving on 30 March. The Asus Transformer, which comes with a Tegra 2 dual-core processor and a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, has just been made available for pre-order in Taiwan. The Eee Pad Transformer’s major selling point is an optional keyboard which slots in and converts the tablet into a laptop-like machine. Optional functionality As TechRadar’s Hands on: Asus Eee Pad Transformer review points out, the tablet section sports a miniHDMI port, but the (possibly crucial) USB ports are only on the optional keyboard. The date, as revealed in DigiTimes , has not arrived with confirmed UK pricing, but we’re still expecting the price to be between £379 and £399, depending on the amount of storage (16, 32 or 64GB) and whether it includes 3G, with a probable £479 price tag for a bundle including

”French spiderman” takes on Burj Khalifa

DUBAI: After scaling the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Sydney Opera House, the “French Spiderman” now has his sights set on the world”s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa in the cosmopolitan Gulf emirate of Dubai. Alain Robert, 48, is due Monday to climb the exterior of the skyscraper which stands 828-metres (2,717-feet) tall, as part of an “Education Without Borders” conference for which it is being used as a venue, organisers said. The climber, whose nickname comes from wearing the outfit of the fictional superhero while scaling the tallest of the tall around the globe, usually works without a safety harness, relying on bare hands and sturdy footing. In Dubai, however, he will resort to a rope and harness, organisers said. “The problem in Dubai is the hot weather (of) up to 40 degrees (Celsius, 104 Fahrenheit),” he said back in January 2010 when he announced his ambition to step up to the challenge. “My biggest fear is to waste my time on earth. Radioactive iodine 1,150 times limit in Japan sea

CNet Analysis OSAKA: The operator of Japan”s Fukushima nuclear plant has detected radioactive iodine 1,150 times the legal limit in water 30 metres (100 feet) from reactors 5 and 6, the nuclear safety agency said Monday. Those two reactors were under maintenance when a huge 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit, triggering a devastating 14-metre tsunami that tore into the northeast coast and crippled cooling functions at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Previously Tokyo Electric Power, the operator, said that reactor five”s external, non-emergency power connection had been restored and cooling of its spent fuel pool had resumed. At reactor six, the emergency power generator and cooling functions had been restored, TEPCO had said. On Sunday, levels of radioactive iodine some 1,850 times the legal limit were reported a few hundred metres (yards) offshore, up from 1,250 times the limit on Saturday, but officials ruled out an immediate threat to marine life or to seafood safety.
