HUNZA: The administration has asked for three more days as the deadline to widening the Ataabad Lake spillway expired, said sources Tuesday. The affectees of Shishkit and Gilmat had given the administration the deadline of June 29, 2010 but the Force Commander Gilgit-Baltistan General Javed Bajwa asked for three more days for the widening of Ataabad Lake spillway. “Negotiations will be held with the affectees of Shishkit and Gilmat with the consultation of Frontier Works Organization ,” said Force Commander Gilgit Baltistan. Today, the water outflow from Ataabad Lake was recorded at 15,876 cusecs while the water level has risen up to 2 inches during the last 12 hours. It is to be noted that a protest was held on June 18 and 19 in Tehsil Gojal and Ali Abad demanding the spillway to be widened. Awaz Apni KARACHI: MQM has claimed that 7 MQM activists have been severely wounded by the ruling party’s armed elements in Skardu during election campaign for Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) legislative assembly. A statement issued by MQM’s headquarters Thursday, said that MQM activists have been assaulted by armed men in the presence of Mehdi Shah, ruling party candidate at Sakey ground school polling station. The wounded MQM district committee activists are identified as Mohammad Sharif Kakar, Munnawar Hussein, Shujat Hussein, Shabbir Hussein, Mohammad Ismail, Mohammad Muddassir and Zahid Ali. The MQM has strongly condemned assault on innocent activists, and declared such attacks as undemocratic tricks to subside MQM as opposition fears MQM’s win in G-B legislative assembly elections. MQM has demanded President Zardari, PM Gillani and election commission to take action against the assailants of MQM activists at Sakey ground school polling station.

Awaz Apni ISLAMABAD: Muttahida Quami Movement’s MNA Wasim Akhtar Thursday alleged that government is involved in firing on MQM’s candidates in Gilgit-Baltistan. Speaking in Awaz Apni, Wasim Akhtar said election results are being manipulated, asking the President to intervene and bring a halt to, what he called, the rigging in the ongoing G-B polls so that derailment of democracy can be stopped. He said it would be difficult for MQM to accept the results if what he called the rigging in Gilgit-Baltistan is not stopped.

Awaz Apni ISLAMABAD: A strong earthquake shook various areas in Pakistan early Monday, sending people running from their homes.However, there were no immediate reports of any casualties or major damage.The cities jolted were Islamabad, Swat, Chitral, Gilgit, Bonair, Peshawar,Abbotabad, Kohat, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Mirpur, Batgram, Hangu, Kurk and Azad Kashmir.The epic centre of the earthquake was Hindu Kush mountain range, according to the Meotrological department.The Met Office said that the intensity of the tremors was registered 5.7 on Richter scale.According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake shockwaves were felt at 4-13 in the early morning on Monday.
