In Depth: 10 biggest gadget let-downs of 2012

CNETAnalysis: Being a gadget fan can be saddening sometimes. Gadgets you’ve waited for for years turn out to be less than you expected, or don’t turn up at all. Much-hyped hardware turns out to be merely okay rather than mind-blowingly brilliant. Developers decide not to bother with a particular platform. Or firms who know better just release something expensive and weird. We saw all of these things and more in 2012 – so here are our nominations for the ten biggest gadget disappointments of the year. 10. Sony PlayStation Vita – great but poorly supported Do we still need handheld consoles in an era of smartphone gaming? Sony says yes, and its PS Vita is a great bit of gaming kit. Unfortunately, it’s also a bit of gaming kit that’s screaming out for decent things to play on it: Sony says that third party support has been “surprising and disappointing”, and it’s definitely affected sales: in August, the PSP was outselling the Vita two to one . 9. Microsof

Buying Guide: Gear of the year: TechRadar’s top tech from 2012

CNETAnalysis: I’ve been the reviews editor on TechRadar for a few years now but I don’t think I can remember a year quite as exciting as 2012. I think it’s been one of the greatest years in consumer tech we’ve ever seen. It may even be the greatest. That might sound like hyperbole but think about it for a second there, internet, and you’ll see that it’s true – for the consumer tech enthusiast, 2012 has been a solid stream of uninterrupted success. The smartphone market is more exciting and innovative today than it has ever been in its history. There are excellent products at all price ranges instead of just right at the very top. We’ve got Ultra HD, Smart and 3D TVs breaking through televisual barriers we didn’t even know existed a few years ago. Ultrabooks and Macbooks are pushing mobile computing into a new age of super-slim and super-awesome. We’ve finally got access to decent Android tablets for well under £200/$200. Cameras are now internet connect

Tutorial: Power retro gaming with a Raspberry Pi

CNETAnalysis: There are many fine national institutions this sceptred isle has to offer: fish and chips, the perfect pint and Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach to name but a few. There is one institution, however, that stands proud, shoulder to shoulder with the iconic monuments that make Britain great. One that has bred a generation of imaginative free thinkers. One that symbolises everything that was good back in ‘the day’. That one is none other than the mighty 8-bit home computing revolution. These revolutionary creations were the heavyweight champions of 80s gaming, and some of the most cherished items of computing memorabilia to grace the pages of eBay. To relive those bygone days often requires us to install any number of emulators onto our hulking behemoth PCs, which takes away some of the spirit that embodies the golden age of the home computer. There’s another option, of course; we could purchase one of our beloved machines from eBay and hook

Four killed when Russian airliner crash lands

Reported by Maryum Razzaq MOSCOW: A Russian airliner flying without passengers broke into pieces after it slid off the runway and crashed onto a highway outside Moscow upon landing on Saturday, killing four of the eight crew on board and leaving smoking chunks of fuselage on the icy road. The crash during peak holiday travel ahead of Russia’s New Year’s vacation, which runs from Sunday through January 9, cast a spotlight on the country’s poor air-safety record despite President Vladimir Putin’s calls to improve controls. Television footage showed the Tupolev Tu-204 jet with smoke billowing from the tail end and the cockpit broken clean off the front. Some witnesses told state channel Rossiya-24 they saw a man thrown from the plane as it rammed into the barrier of the highway outside Vnukovo airport, just southwest of the capital, and another described pulling other people from the wreckage. “The plane split into three pieces,” Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for

Tutorial: Windows file and network sharing: the complete guide

CNETAnalysis: Ultimate networking guide: Where to begin? Networking has become one of the most essential elements of computing. Forget processors. Forget graphics cards. We know you can string together your own home network. A wired network is sheer block-building child’s play. A wireless network isn’t much more strenuous, largely thanks to WPS reducing the complicated bit to little more than a button press or two. Or if you’re like us you might memorise your WPA key, being able to think for ourselves and all. But we’re here to delve into the murky world of Windows networking and file sharing. We’re not talking the Homegroup system here; Microsoft has done a decent job of making that easy enough to use. We’re going to delve into the Windows NT networking system that underpins this and indeed all of Windows file sharing. That’s the key here – not only does it arm you with the knowledge to twiddle with network shares on Windows 7, but without too many

Gang rape victim dies; peaceful protests in New Delhi

Reported by Maryum Razzaq NEW DELHI: The 23-year old woman whose gang rape sparked protests and a national debate about violence against women in India died of her injuries on Saturday, prompting a security lockdown in New Delhi and an acknowledgement from the prime minister that social change is needed. Bracing for a new wave of protests, the authorities deployed thousands of policemen, closed 10 metro stations and banned vehicles from some main roads in the heart of New Delhi, where demonstrators have converged since the attack to demand improved women’s rights. Hundreds of people staged peaceful protests at two locations on Saturday morning. The medical student, severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, had been flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday for specialist treatment. The intense media coverage of the attack and the use of social media to galvanise the protests, mostly by you

In Depth: Tablets in 2013: what to expect

CNETAnalysis: 2012 was a big year for tablets. Google entered the tablet market with not one, but two tablets, both of which offered the compelling combination of great specs and low prices. Apple launched two full-sized iPads and the iPad mini , and even Microsoft got in on the game, with the first batch of Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, such as the Microsoft Surface . Not much is yet known about what will come next year, but a lot can be deduced – or at least guessed, based on what we’ve already seen. 1. The next Nexus It doesn’t seem too much of a stretch to imagine that Google will unleash a new wave of Nexus tablets at some point in the year. Their Nexus phones have all been spaced roughly a year apart and much of the rest of the industry seems to work in the same way. The Nexus 7 was announced at Google I/O in June and released the following month. If the same thing happens again we could have a new Nexus tablet in as little as six months, thou
