Samsung: We’ll sue Apple over LTE technology

CNETAnalysis: Samsung could have the last laugh in its ongoing dispute with Apple. According to a report from the Korea Times , Samsung execs plan to sue Apple “immediately” if it ever releases any devices with advanced long-term evolution (LTE) mobile technology. Samsung holds just over 12 percent of the world’s LTE patents, according to data from Thomson-Reuters, while Nokia leads the charge with 18.9 percent. Qualcomm follows with 12.5 percent and Ericsson has 11.6 percent. Apple already has an LTE device on the market – the iPad 3 – but observers think Samsung could be waiting for the Cupertino company to release an LTE-capable iPhone before making its move. Put up your dukes All signs point to Apple’s next iPhone, the iPhone 5 , having LTE capability, making it the perfect target for Samsung’s wrath. The iOS-wielding Apple has even been in talks with Korean carriers about putting the next-gen iPhone on 4G LTE networks. Samsung would hit Apple where

Samsung Galaxy S3 vanishes, Jelly Bean in Sept

CNET Analysis: There are plenty of reasons for the Samsung Galaxy S3 stock to start vanishing, which is exactly what’s happening right now, and we believe it’s due to more than the court win for Apple, but that has to be the major factor. The recent news of more colors for the Galaxy S3 is sure to increase sales, although these aren’t available in stores just yet, so are no relation to low stock. Recent survey points to Samsung Galaxy S3 vanishing – Trip Chowdhry, Equity Research LinkedIn profile seen here , has reported that stores are selling out of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 and this includes Verizon, AT&T, and Costco stores. He mentions that Verizon stores are also seeing the Galaxy S3 outselling the iPhone over the last month. It is worth noting that Chowdhry polled a number of AT&T stores, five in total, and they all reported an increase in Galaxy S3 sales after the Apple vs. Samsung verdict. There are a number of reasons why there has bee

iPhone 5: BoD supports key feature

CNET Analysis: When the iPhone 5 arrives within the next couple of weeks we’ll see if Apple lives up to the recent rumors and leaked pictures pointing to the design, although some of these iPhone 5 rumors are pointing to new features and also crucial changes for the next piece of hardware. The new iPhone 5 dock connector is pretty much a done deal, even if it is not confirmed, but other rumors such as the possibility that the 6th generation iPhone would make Bluetooth obsolete seem a little far-fetched. If you are in doubt that this is true, then you only need to look at the industry and also some of Apple’s partnerships that include Bluetooth. Bluetooth will be on the iPhone 5 specs list – AirPlay might see major enhancements on the next iPhone, but there are too many reasons why it won’t replace Bluetooth anytime soon. First up there are millions of cars using this technology right now, our last 3 cars all connected to phones via Bluetooth, then we also

Amazon Kindle Touch getting a ‘Paperwhite’ makeover?

CNETAnalysis: As Amazon’s press event draws nearer, so do the news, leaks and rumors grow more frequent. Not only did Amazon announce the Kindle Fire had sold out Thursday, leaked photos reportedly of the Kindle Fire 2 made their way online to prying eyes. As of Thursday evening, the last Amazonian news to hit the internet were photos of a new E Ink Kindle with backlit display. The device looks to be a Kindle Touch, the company’s touchscreen e-reader, though with an updated design, look and new technologies on board. Backlit beauty The leaked images show a bottom button-less device, one that’s almost black instead of granite. If the photos are authentic, then the most noticeable change is an improved display, one Amazon appears to refer to as “Paperwhite.” The backlit device is purportedly “higher contract, high resolution” with integrated lighting. It supposedly has up to eight weeks of battery life as well, no matter if the light is used or not. Rival

Samsung introduces line of ultra high speed memory cards

CNETAnalysis: At IFA 2012 , Samsung debuted the Ativ S , the Ativ Tab , a slew of PCs – Ativ Smart PC Pro , Ativ Smart PC , Series 5 and 7 Slates – and a Galaxy Camera and it’s still not done. The plucky company rolled out a new line of external memory cards for phones and cameras Thursday, going for the trifecta of speed, density, and reliability. There are three versions to the cards: “Pro,” the professional edition, the premium “Plus” and commercial “Standard” series. Though there are multiple, Samsung touted the Pro and all its high-octane power. Pro go Samsung boasts the microSD Pro performs at ultra-high speed with up to 64GB of data storage. Thanks to a read speed of up to 70MB per second, the Pro runs 3-times faster than conventional microSDs, according to Samsung. It’s also got “advanced semiconductor technology” with 20 nanometer-class NAND flash, turning it into any LTE-friendly device’s best friend. It can even store full HD (1080p) videos.

IFA 2012: Sharp shows off IGZO – the screen tech that could be in the next iPad

CNETAnalysis: Touchscreen technology is about to change in a big way and TechRadar managed to get a glimpse at just what will be in smartphones and tablets in the very near future. Sharp may have been all about big-screen TVs on its stand, but it was the smaller screen tech that caught our eye the most. IGZO isn’t just a gimmicky name, it comes from the materials that make up the screen tech – Indium, gallium, zinc, oxide. The tech hit the news back in July as it was rumoured that the iPad Mini, if it ever rears its small but perfectly formed head, will come with an IGZO LCD. Sharp hasn’t shown the technology off before in Europe, so we decided to get up close and personal with it at IFA 2012. POWER UP: Power consumption is next to nothing And we have to say, the technology is mind-blowing. It’s sharper than current screens and offers something that has been long-needed in the smartphone and tablet world – a low-power screen solution. Essentially, where

Amazon files for double-sided device patent

CNETAnalysis: Amazon has filed a patent for a unique dual-sided tablet featuring two screens. Why would you want a screen on each side? Interestingly, the second screen should improve the tablet’s battery life. Each screen in the proposed patent would serve a different purpose. One screen, an e-ink display, would serve static content like text-heavy documents and e-books. The opposite screen would be a full color LCD or OLED display, best used for videos, games, magazines, and web browsing. By including both screens on the same tablet, it could switch between the two in order to conserve energy running apps and documents when only the e-ink display is needed. The distant and immediate future of Kindle The patent also suggests deeper integration of the dual-screen format. In one example both screens would be touch capable, allowing users to drag and move content between the two displays. It also details a method to use the tablet’s built-in cameras to de

IFA 2012: LG’s EA93 monitor offers cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio

CNETAnalysis: LG is all about the cinema-feeling with its new EA93 monitor which offers a ludicrous yet weirdly alluring 21:9 aspect ratio. As well as LG’s ‘Cinema Screen’ design, the 29-inch monitor offers high-quality lifelike colours (LG’s words) thanks to the IPS monitor’s 100 per cent sRGB colour space and 300nit brightness. Response times come in at GTG 5ms. Bye bye second monitor If you’re a multitasker by nature, you can use the 4-Screen Split feature to divide the display into four segments, or even link several gadgets up to the monitor at once using the Dual Link-up function. This means you might be able to get by with just the one mega-wide monitor instead of a dual-monitor set up. Visuals aside, the EA93 also offers 7W stereo speakers and two HDMI ports, a USB 3.0 jack, one DVI-D (dual) and two display ports. No word from LG on how much it’ll be selling the LG EA93 monitor for, but since it didn’t offer a release date either, we guess we’ll

Amazon Appstore goes live across Europe

CNETAnalysis: Amazon has announced today that its Android Appstore is now available across Europe. Previously only available in North America, the Amazon Appstore is now accessible from the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain which means many of the best European countries have been left out. No Belgium? To download it you’ll need to enable the installation of apps from ‘unknown sources’ on your phone or tablet, and then download from the Amazon Appstore website . It’s not available on Google Play, see. Same old, same old While most Android users will find no reason to bother with the Amazon Appstore – it offers pretty much the same Apps as Google Play – the really interesting part of this announcement is the likelihood that a European Amazon Kindle Fire launch will not be too far behind. With Amazon’s next media event planned for early September , speculation is still rife that the UK and Europe will miss out on the first iteration of the Kindle Fire

IFA 2012: Inspiron inspiration behind Dell’s twisty XPS Duo 12 laptop

CNETAnalysis: Dell’s newest additions launched at IFA 2012 are multifunctional Windows 8 friendly devices, with the XPS Duo 12 leading the pack. Dell describes the XPS Duo 12 as “tablet meets notebook, meets genius” thanks to its flip-hinge design that allows you to use it as a laptop when open or a tablet when closed (just like the original Dell Inspiron Duo, and a bunch of Asus’ new slate-cum-notebooks). It’s a 12.5-inch ultraportable laptop-style device crafted from machined aluminium and carbon fibre, while the Full HD screen should set the whole thing off pretty nicely. CPU talk There’s the option to go for an Intel Core i7 CPU, although lower-spec, lower-price options will also be available on release. Windows RT isn’t left out in the cold thanks to the new Dell XPS 10 Windows RT tablet with detachable keyboard. Dell reckons this will give you 20 hours of battery life (although it hasn’t specified what you’ll be doing during that 20 hours) fro

Customized Samsung Galaxy S3 jealousy

CNET Analysis: Samsung has been in the headlines recently for losing a mammoth patent tussle with Apple, which resulted in the Korean giant losing $1.05 billion to their rivals. Regardless of which side you have been on, you are all going to love hearing this latest story which is the new Samsung talking point for the moment. Forget about the Galaxy Note 2 which has everyone excited right now, as you don’t often see generosity like this. Samsung Canada has donated a customized Samsung Galaxy S3 to one lucky consumer who drew a rather ‘epic’ picture of a dragon along with a personal request to Samsung. After declaring himself a fan by acquiring a whole set of Samsung electronics goods, consumer Shane decided to try his luck in sending a message to Samsung via Facebook, asking them for a free Galaxy S3 handset in return for his loyalty. Along with the picture was a very cool picture of a dragon and to his surprise, he received a swift response from Samsung.

Oct. 29 flagged as Microsoft Windows Phone 8 launch

CNETAnalysis: Looks like we’ll get some Microsoft trick-or-treat gifts as new reports point to October as the time Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices are officially unleashed on the market. An anonymous source speaking with ZDNet said a series of Softie-sponsored events point to some specific squares on the calendar as key dates for devices touting the new OS. Windows 8 will be available to the public Oct. 26 , but it looks like Microsoft is planning a pre-launch party the day before to officially unveil the OS. It’ll actually share the stage with the Surface RT, ZDNet’s source said, in a New York City event. Microsoft has confirmed the tablet is going on sale Oct. 26 , so no big surprise there. There’s more… A few days later – Oct. 29 – the source reported Windows Phone 8 gets its official launch. Rumor has it the sendoff will be in San Francisco or Los Angeles. Apparently, the 29th is thought of as a “consumer launch.” Devices packing Windows Phone

New iPhone 5 further hinted by Apple’s iPhone 4S recycling initiative

CNETAnalysis: As if there wasn’t enough evidence already that a new iPhone is coming in September, Apple recently began taking back the iPhone 4S as part of a recycling program, further hinting at the iPhone 5 ‘s impending arrival. Apple’s “Reuse and Recycling” initiative allows customers to return used devices to Apple for a hefty chunk of store credit. The devices don’t even have to be Apple-made – the program accepts Windows computers, as well. But normally devices that haven’t yet outlived their shelf lives – like the new MacBook Pro with Retina display – are left out of the program, as Apple would rather users hang on to them. So does the recent addition of the iPhone 4S to the list of devices accepted for recycling indicate that the new iPhone 5 is about to be introduced? Sure seems that way Apple is hardly the first company to start offering high trade-in value for the iPhone 4S – Amazon is currently offering a $500 gift card in exchange for

IFA 2012: Asus goes old school with liquid-cooled ‘transformer’ PC and monitors at IFA

CNETAnalysis: With portable gadgetry dominating the IFA 2012 mindshare, Asus is bucking the trend with some heavy duty, high end PC kit including a desktop rig and a pair of monitors. The desktop beast is the ROG TYTAN CG8890, a money-no-object affair aimed at gamers. It’s a range-topping Intel Core i7-3960X six-core processor does the heavy lifting at speeds up to 4.2GHz. Graphics grunt, meanwhile, takes the form of the unparalleled NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690, the fastest 3D card in Christendom. Or anywhere else, for that matter. To sweeten the deal, Asus has chucked in its Xonar DX sound card for smooth sounds, along with dual 128GB SSDs in speedy RAID0 config. More than meets the eye… And get this. The CG8890 has an aerodynamic polygonal exterior that transforms when overclocked while the additional DEFCON and bottom grill lighting indicator shows system readiness with blue and red LED lights. Yeah, baby. Moving on to monitors, the ASUS Designo MX279

Tutorial: How to get more from your OS X Calendar

CNETAnalysis: The tight integration with OS X means iCal (or Calendar in OS X Mountain Lion ) is probably the first choice for many Mac users, when it comes to organising their personal affairs. But what a lot of people don’t realise is that iCal is capable of receiving and sending lots of types of data: emails, web links, Address Book contacts and even Google Maps reference can be used. It’s this integration that makes iCal so flexible and a lot more capable than most users might think. With functionality such as iCloud syncing, shared calendars, drag-and-drop event creation, and natural language recognition, you have a true social scheduling solution. If you’re an iCal user that only utilises the app for inputting single events or simple scheduling, the following techniques will show you new opportunities. Naturally speaking iCal’s Natural Language allows the user to type in casual sentences to create potentially complex events. When adding an eve

Samsung Unpacked live stream, 2012 start time

CNET Analysis: It is time for Samsung Unpacked 2012 and the main highlights for this show are certainly surrounding the word Note, which means the Galaxy Note 2 and we should also see features from the Galaxy Note 10.1 on the new 5.5-inch smartphone.
