Malik urges lawyers to avoid rally in Islamabad

CNews ISLAMABAD: The Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik has appealed lawyers not to hold a protest rally in Islamabad on July 10 due to law and order situation. The statement issued by the interior ministry said that according to reports received from agencies, big cities of Punjab including Islamabad could be targeted by suicide bombers, therefore, an appeal has been made to lawyers to postpone their rally till the improvement of the situation. The statement added that the purpose of appeal is not to bar lawyers to hold rally and lawyers would organize it at a specific place after consultation with Islamabad admistration.

MQM calls for measures to maintain tranquility in metropolis

At least eight killed, scores injured in Karachi clashes

CNews Karachi: Eight people were killed Wednesday in Karachi - including five who were burnt alive in a downtown building - during clashes between two groups of lawyers. The troubles were part of a countrywide protest against the manhandling of Sher Afgan Niazi, a former parliamentary affairs minister, by a crowd of lawyers in Lahore Tuesday evening.In Karachi the violence swept when late Wednesday afternoon two lawyers group clashed at Malir Bar offices over Tuesday's attack.Mobs set dozens of vehicles and some buildings on fire, gutting at least two buildings, including the offices of a bar association in Malir neighbourhood. Five charred bodies were recovered from Tahir Plaza that houses several law offices.Civil Hospital confirmed seven bodies had been brought, including the five completely burnt bodies including a woman. Constitution amended as emergency ends today

ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf on Friday amended various articles of the Constitution providing protection and continuity to the superior courts judges who took oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO), and removed those who did not take oath under the PCO. However, they would be entitled to pension and other retirement benefits.The amendments were made a day before he intends to lift emergency and restore the Constitution. The president, in exercise of powers under the PCO, has amended Articles 41, 44, 193, 194, 208 and 270-C.Amendment to Article 193 has lowered the age of appointment of high court judges from 45 years to 40 years. This will facilitate entry of judges into high courts at younger age to remain in service for a longer period. Previously, the minimum age to become a high court judge was 40 years, which was raised to 45 sometime back and now it is again reduced to 40 years.Article 270-C of the Constitution has been amended to provide that the judges who ...

Lawyers stage demo outside Balochistan Assembly

CNews QUETTA: Lawyers protesting against the presidential election brought out a rally and staged a demonstration in front of the Balochistan Assembly here. High Court Bar Association’s president, Hadi Shakil, Raja Rabnawaz, Sabir Jamil advocates and other senior lawyers were leading the protest rally brought out from the District Court here. The lawyers voiced slogans against President’s election and termed it unconstitutional, while taking rounds of different roads, which had turned into a public meeting. The leaders of the legal community in their address on this occasion condemned the presidential election and said that the election of a President in uniform was illegal, which they would not accept under any circumstances. They vowed to further expand and electrify their protest movement against the President’s uniform and said that the people from all school of thoughts would have to support this movement.

Supreme Court rules Musharraf can contest presidential election in uniform

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court ruled Friday that military ruler Pervez Musharraf can run in presidential polls next week while keeping his role as army chief, dealing a major blow to the opposition. The court threw out a raft of legal challenges that argued that Musharraf was ineligible to stand for another five-year term in office in the October 6 election. Opposition supporters threw rotten eggs and tomatoes at the imposing marble court building in Islamabad and chanted "Shame! Shame!" and "Go, Musharraf, go!" after the verdict was announced. "The petitions hereby are dismissed as not maintainable" by a 6-3 majority, said Rana Bhagwandas, the head of the panel of nine judges hearing the petitions.
