Kosovo MPs proclaim independence

Kosovo's parliament has unanimously endorsed a declaration of independence from Serbia, in an historic session. The declaration, read by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, said Kosovo would be a democratic country that respected the rights of all ethnic communities. The US and a number of EU countries are expected to recognise Kosovo on Monday. Serbia's PM denounced the US for helping create a "false state". Serbia's ally, Russia, called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting. Correspondents say the potential for trouble between Kosovo's Serbs and ethnic Albanians is enormous. Kosovo PM confirms independence to be declared on Sunday

CNews PRISTINA: Prime Minister Hashim Thaci confirmed Saturday that Kosovo would declare its independence from Serbia on Sunday, the day when the "will of the citizens of Kosovo" would be implemented. "Tomorrow will be a day of calm, of understanding, and of state engagements for the implementation of the will of the citizens of Kosovo," he told reporters after a meeting with religious leaders from around the province. Expectations that independence would be declared on Sunday have running high, but Thaci's comments marked the first top-level confirmation that the long-awaited break with Serbia would take place on that day.
