Awaz Apni UK Election 2010 The general election has created a hung parliament. A hung parliament is one in which no party has an overall majority, which means no party has more than half of MPs in the House of Commons. It means that whichever party ends up in power will not be able to win votes to pass laws without the support of members of other parties. That support may come in the form of a formal coalition with smaller parties, or the governing party may have to negotiate with other parties to get laws passed. In the simplest terms, to get an absolute majority, a party would have needed to win 326 seats. In reality, an effective majority could be smaller because the speaker and his deputies, although members of parliament, do not usually vote. Also, Sinn Fein has four MPs, who in the last parliament refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Queen and as a result were not entitled to vote. The United Kingdom general election of 2010 which was held today, 6 May, to elect one Member of Parliament in each of the 650 constituencies to the House of Commons, the lower house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The election will be more than five years after the previous election. Voting took place between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm. Local elections will also be held in some areas on that day. The election was called on 6 April, and Parliament was dissolved on 12 April for the ensuing campaign. The governing Labour Party will be looking to secure a fourth consecutive term in office and to restore support lost since 1997 The Conservative Party will seek to gain a dominant position in UK politics after losses in the 1990s, and to replace Labour as the governing party. If you are voting in person, go to your allocated voting station between 7am and 10pm on election day. Your polling card may help administration. When you arrive, staff will take your details and cross off your name on their checklist. In Northern Ireland, staff will also ask for a form of photographic ID. You will be given a ballot paper listing candidates and parties. It will be printed on special paper or feature an official mark and numbered to combat fraud. Take the ballot paper to one of the booths, which are screened to ensure secrecy. Put an X in the box next to the name of the person you want to vote for. If you mark any more boxes, your paper will be invalid. Fold the ballot paper so others cannot see your choice and post it in the ballot box.
