‘One fake degree to put all under suspicion’

Awaz Apni ISLAMABAD: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Javed Leghari Wednesday said even a single degree of a parliamentarian, if proven fake, will put all the degrees under suspicion. Talking exclusively to Awaz Apni News here, the HEC Chairman said degrees of all the parliamentarians including Rehman Malik and Babar Awan are being scrutinized while copies of 161 degrees, which were unintelligible, have been sent back. “Had the degrees were in readable condition, the verification process could have completed within a three-four days,” Dr. Javed Leghari added.

MQM demands undoing of power tariffs raise

Awaz Apni KARACHI: The members of Sindh Assembly hailing from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), decrying the raise in power tariffs, termed it a stark injustice to people despite the continuous spells of power outages, Geo News reported Wednesday. According to a statement issued here, Muttahida demanded the government to retract its decision on tariffs hike. The MQM’s MPAs denounced in strong words the recent power tariffs raise by 14 paisas despite the raging power load shedding across Sindh including Karachi and termed the decision as ‘anti-people’. The MPAs said the ongoing power crisis is extremely disconcerting to the people and business strata across the country including Karachi. The Muttahida leaders demanded President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to take grim notice of this raise in power tariffs.

7.6% raise in power tariff from July 1

Awaz Apni ISLAMABAD: Government has hiked power tariff by 7.6 percent in line with the IMF agreement. According to the Ministry of Water and Power the revised tariff will be effective from July 1. The above raise will be in addition to the hike announced earlier by NEPRA in consequence to the monthly fuel adjustment. The notification says that the government has, under NEPRA Act, hiked the power tariff for consumers of eight power distributors as well as Karachi Electric Supply Company. The government’s original plan was to implement the hike from April this year but had to delay it for two months as country suffered from increased power shortfall and load-shedding. Earlier, the government had raised the electricity tariff by 4.6 percent in October 2009 and then in Janaury 2010 by 12 percent as part of its plan to bring in phases a total increase of 24 percent in the electricity rates. Against Laura Roslin and Glen Walken

Matt Yglesias uses the turnover in the office of Senate President pro tempore to complain about that the current presidential succession plan is both foolish (#3 after the president is someone in a ceremonial role that you qualify for by being superannuated?), and perhaps unconstitutional.  Fortunately, there's a plan already drafted.  The Continuity of Government Commission -- a bunch of big names from past Congresses and administrations, with political scientists Tom Mann and Norm Ornstein as the major players -- released their report on the presidency one year ago.  While their main focus was, as the title of the commission suggests, focused on the dangers of a catastrophic terrorist attack. The Mann/Ornstein report suggests removing Congress from the line of succession.  Furthermore, they also want to remove the tail end of the cabinet, limiting cabinet-level succession to State, Defense, Justice, and Treasury (in that order).  After that, the commission suggests that presiden

Apple’s iPhone 4 delivery difficulties might open up company to competitive risk

EL SEGUNDO, USA: Apple Inc.’s difficulties in satisfying the massive demand for the iPhone 4 are raising questions about the company’s management of the supply chain and prompting frustrated customers to consider competitors’ smart phones, according to iSuppli Corp. iSuppli estimates that Apple in 2010 will ship 21.7 million iPhone 4s, representing 51 percent of the 42.6 million iPhones Apple is expected to ship during the year. The attached figure presents Apple’s top-line forecast for the iPhone from 2008 to 2013—a sum that includes Apple’s previous-generation iPhone 3G and 3GS models. Releasing a new phone every June since 2007, when the first iPhone launched on the market, Apple has risen very quickly from virtually zero presence to become the No. 3 smart phone player, ranking just below Nokia Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM)—both of which have enjoyed much longer runs in the wireless field. Nokia, responding to the threat of the iPhone 4, recently reorganized its business u

Adobe should cut its iPhone losses and switch focus

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Adobe should cut its losses with Apple and target its flagship Flash Player at telecoms carriers, independent analyst Ovum has claimed in a new report. With the spat over Apple’s refusal to support the Adobe Flash technology on its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices continuing to generate column inches, Ovum believes it is time for Adobe to turn the tables by courting new sponsors of its technology in the shape of telecoms operators. The report states that Adobe and telecoms carriers are faced with similar threats and share similar goals in relation to value-added applications and content, and that carriers should therefore seek an industry-wide partnership with Adobe to use Flash as the basis of their own multi-screen device, development, delivery, and distribution systems. Ovum believes both sides could work together to create a developer ecosystem around connected devices that would compete with, and even outdo its rivals in terms of developer and user exper

Feingold vs. the Bank Tax

Here's Kevin Drum, Monday, on Russ Feingold's decision to oppose the banking bill as it came out of conference: But seriously: WTF? This is the final report of a conference committee. There's no more negotiation. It's an up-or-down vote and there isn't going to be a second chance at this. You either vote for this bill, which has plenty of good provisions even if doesn't break up all the big banks, or else you vote for the status quo. That's it. That's the choice. It's not a game. It's not a time for Feingold to worry about his reputation for independence. It's a time to make a decision between actively supporting something good and actively supporting something bad. And Feingold has decided to actively support something bad. That's  Monday.  And what was, apparently, the real-life effect of Feingold's stubborn stand?  Well..back to Drum, on Tuesday : After three Republican senators threatened to vote against the financial re

How Far is Youlgreave from Doncaster? And Other Geography Questions

My sister told me about a new TV series (well, new to me!) called The Generations Project , and I read a post on their blog about Geography .  This reminded me of another tip I should share with you -- using maps in genealogy research! Ten years ago (tomorrow, actually, happy anniversary honey!) I married an Englishman, and found I had a whole new line of genealogy to research, from scratch, and having never researched England genealogy.  No one had ever attempted his family history, so I set about doing it.  While I was researching I would ask him numerous questions such as, "Is Youlgreave close to Doncaster?," "Is Balby in Yorkshire County?"  I soon learned how much my husband DIDN'T know about his own country, so I was on my own. I have looked at historical maps and actually have a software program called AniMap* for US research, but I still revert to Google Maps for simple and quick answers to my geography questions.  I really like the "Get Directions&

Dollar should be replaced as international standard, U.N. report says

Awaz Apni The dollar is an unreliable international currency and should be replaced by a more stable system, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs said in a report released Tuesday. The use of the dollar for international trade came under increasing scrutiny when the U.S. economy fell into recession. "The dollar has proved not to be a stable store of value, which is a requisite for a stable reserve currency," the report said. Many countries, in Asia in particular, have been building up massive dollar reserves. As a result, those countries' currencies have become undervalued, decreasing their ability to import goods from abroad. The World Economic and Social Survey 2010 is supporting a proposal long advocated by the International Monetary Fund to create a standardized international system for liquidity transfer. Under this proposed system, countries would no longer have to buy up foreign currencies, as China has long done with the U

'Facebook for Farmers' in rural China

Like millions of Chinese, Fu Yajun left her hardscrabble life in the countryside for the promise of high wages at a coastal factory town. But the work she found at a Guangdong shoe manufacturer was far from her dreams, and the low and unstable salary barely put food on her table. But a $600 loan changed everything. "We didn't see a bright future working for others," said the middle-school dropout. "After that experience, my husband and I decided to come back home to start something of our own." Fu and her husband turned to Wokai, a U.S. microfinance firm whose name in Chinese means "I start." Wokai provides microloans to more than 350 impoverished farmers in China -- with the funds coming from donors around the world. Nicknamed "Facebook for Farmers," a contributor to Wokai.org can choose exactly where the funds go. Farmers' profiles and photos are posted online and donors choose to whom and how much they give. Fu had init

More Tales From Teh Tea Party Crazie

This time it's Rand Paul. Via the Huffingtonpost , we find this from a blog called Barefoot and Progressive : From Huffingtonpost: Is Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul a creationist? Last week, Paul spoke at a conference for the Christian Home Educators of Kentucky at a Louisville church where he dodged a question about the age of the earth and expressed skepticism about faith-based programs. The first question during the Q&A was from a man who asked a two-part question, including how old Paul believed the world was. "I forgot to say I was only taking easy questions," Paul joked, adding: "I'm going to pass on the age of the Earth. I'm just going to have to pass." Barefoot and Progressive tracks down the Christian Home Educators of Kentucky and finds that one of the group's objectives is to: Protect children from mental physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by secular humanists in a socialist society or governmental system. Australia's new Leftist Prime Minister does not support legalising homosexual marriage Most Australian conservative commentators are thoroughly freaked by Ms Gillard's far-Left background. It may also be worth noting that she owes her ascent to PM not to her party's Left but to its Right. Such a drift has certainly happened before in the Australian Labor Party.
