Interview: Qualcomm: How we’re making future 4G LTE devices work anywhere

CNETAnalysis: Complete 4G roaming is very much on the cards, says says Qualcomm’s Roberto di Pietro. Qualcomm has just announced the RF360 – a single chip that provides access to over 40 mobile bands globally. 4G LTE is provided on many frequency bands in different countries and it’s this variation that’s made the RF360 necessary. “LTE is the first technology that’s embracing all the regions at the same time but on the other hand, LTE is a challenge to handle all the different spectrum from region to region and even from country to country,” di Pietro explained to us in a chat at MWC 2013 this week. “We really want to have a single device to handle all this spectrum. RF360 is the first step towards the global roaming dream. You can have a single device. This was one of the bottlenecks preventing the widespread adoption of LTE. Our customers can utilise a single platform, rather than developing 3, 4 or 5 globally.” It’s good news for handsets manufacture

MWC 2013: Sony Xperia Tablet Z price makes it a worthy iPad adversary

CNETAnalysis: The wildly impressive looking Sony Xperia Tablet Z has formally been shown off at MWC 2013 , and the 10.1-inch device is taking on the likes of the iPad and Galaxy Tabs on not only specs but also price. Sony’s latest Android tablet was announced in January , and the headline specs haven’t got any less impressive in the past few weeks. The Xperia Tablet Z’s display is a 10.1-inch WUXGA display – that’s 1920 x 1200 – powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and a whopping 2GB of RAM. Water way to go Also noteworthy is that this tablet is water resistant, making sure an occasional rain splot doesn’t have you scurrying for a very large bag of rice. Given its claim to be the “most premium” Android tablet around, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z price is perhaps the most surprising bit, with the Wi-Fi only version priced at £399/$499 and the 4G/LTE offering at £499/$599. The tablet is, ahem, slated to appear in the spring in the UK, and, dare

MWC 2013: Intel outlines dual-core Clover Trail+ processor at MWC

CNETAnalysis: Discussed briefly at CES 2013 , Intel’s Clover Trail+ dual-core processor ( Z2580 ) was revealed as the next step in the company’s Atom smartphone chips. A direct successor to the 32nm Medfield line of processors, the Clover Trail+ adds a second CPU core to the chip, improving graphics and performance along the way. The Clover Trail+ will be released as three new SKUs – the 2.0GHz Z2580, the 1.6GHz Z2560, and the 1.2GHz Z2520. Each of the chips will also include two PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPUs, and combined with the above benchmarks, should equate to more competitive performance, though the battery life still won’t be as impressive as some smaller processors. Improvements abound The upgrades the Clover Trail+ presents aren’t just limited to performance, as it also allows for more hardware improvements. The latest Atom chips will include support for two cameras, with the primary lens able to capture up to 16MP images, and the second camera supp

Interview: HP: ‘Our mission is to lead in smartphones’

CNETAnalysis: Clearly not stung from previous experience , HP wants to lead in tablets and smartphones. That’s the bullish message from HP’s Head of Mobility Alberto Torres, who told TechRadar that it was a key aim for the corporation: “The mission in my area is to make HP a leader in the tablet space and eventually smartphones.” However he warned that it wouldn’t be soon: “Certainly it’s not a short term aim to lead in phones. It’s not something we’re looking at for this year. Without looking at specific dates, we’re actively looking at our options in that market.” Alberto Torres joined HP five months ago from Nokia, where he was responsible for the ultimately unsuccessful MeeGo project – he was behind the design of the N9 that became the foundation for the colourful Nokia Lumia range. He was keen to show us the Android-based HP Slate 7 here at MWC 2013 , as well as the business-orientated ElitePad 900 , which runs Windows 8 Pro. We asked Torres if it
