UAE Islamists to fight court ruling on citizenship

CNewsworld.com: UAE Islamists to fight court ruling on citizenship ABU DHABI; Seven Islamist activists jailed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will challenge a presidential decree to strip them of their citizenship after a court refused to order authorities to return their passports, their lawyer said on Thursday. The UAE, a major oil exporter, has been cracking down on Islamist dissidents demanding reforms at home since Arab Spring uprisings began in the region last year. The Gulf Arab state, a U.S. ally, revoked the men’s citizenship late last year, saying they posed a threat to national security. Some of the men had demanded greater powers for the Federal National Council, an elected body that advises the government. They were arrested for refusing to sign documents that asked them to “amend their status” by applying for residency visas in the UAE or seeking new nationalities, their families said. “I will file a new case to ask for the presidential decree to b

Flame virus a new age cyber spy tool

CNewsworld.com: Flame virus a new age cyber spy tool SAN FRANCISCO: The Flame computer virus that smoldered undetected for years in Middle Eastern energy facilities confirmed fears that the world has entered a new age of cyber espionage and sabotage. Internet defenders on Wednesday were tearing into freshly exposed Flame malware (malicious software) that could be adapted to spread to critical infrastructures in countries around the world. While the components and tactics of Flame were considered old school, the gigantic virus’s interchangeable software modules and targeted nature were evidence that malware is a potent weapon in the Internet era. “We are seeing much more specific types of malware and attacks,” said McAfee Labs director of security research David Marcus. “When you talk about a situation where the attacker knows the victim and tailors the malware for the environment it jumps out,” he said. “That speaks to good reconnaissance and an attacker who knows

In Depth: New Chrome OS: what you need to know

CNETAnalysis: New Chrome OS: what you need to know Google has redesigned Chrome OS with a more traditional desktop-style appearance. But why has it done it? And is it any good? Here’s everything you need to know. Chrome OS was originally released last year inside Chromebooks laptops from Samsung and Acer . They were essentially netbooks with a different operating system than Windows. But Chrome OS met with huge criticism – not least from this site – that it was too simplistic (the interface was just Google Chrome the browser with no desktop) and that it didn’t really work when you weren’t connected to the internet. Google simply hadn’t done enough work on making its tools work when offline. This is now set to change though – read on for more. Chrome OS could finally be in a position to challenge more basic versions of Windows.

Painkillers use linked to lower cancer risk

CNewsworld.com: Painkillers use linked to lower cancer risk NEW YORK: In a new study from Denmark, people who had taken aspirin, ibuprofen and related painkillers — especially at high doses and for years at a time — were less likely to get skin cancer, compared to those who rarely used those medications. The findings add to growing evidence that long-term use of the medications, known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, may help protect people against skin cancers, including melanoma, the deadliest type. Still, research has not been unanimous in that finding: one large 2008 report found no link between NSAIDs and melanoma. The drugs have also been linked to an increased risk of kidney cancer and come with known bleeding risks — so more research is needed to weigh the possible harms and benefits of the drugs outside of pain relief, researchers said. But the lead author on the new study said it would make sense if NSAIDs were tied to skin cancer risk
