Firing at LoC: 4 Pakistani troops martyred

CNews RAWALPINDI: Four Pakistani troops were martyred as a result of exchange of fire here at Line of Control (LoC). The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirming the occurrence of the above incident, said the exchange of fire began at 2:00 PM and went on till 6:00 PM.The initial reports confirmed deaths of two Pakistani troops and injuring of as many others.The bodies were shifted from the site of the incident after the Pakistani troops returned fire, said Pakistan military spokesman.

4 check post being removed tonight in Waziristan

CNews MIRANSHAH: As many as four check posts will be made defunct tonight in North Waziristan in the wake of successful negotiations held among jirga, security forces and local Taliban.Besides, all the roads in Mir Ali are being re-opened by removing all obstructions on them and lifting the curfew from the area.According to Jirga sources, Jirga organized fruitful talks with the local Taliban, after which they held negotiations with the government office-bearers; after these dialogues, the decision regarding removing the four security check posts from North Waziristan tonight was taken.Two check posts among them are situated in Miranshah area of North Waziristan and the other two are located in Mir Ali.According to Jirga sources, the government gave its consent to ceasefire.

Musharraf’s popularity at all-time low: US survey

CNews ISLAMABAD: A majority of people in Pakistan think that the country is heading in a wrong direction and the present government does not deserve to be re-elected because of its poor performance. According to a survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) of the US Republican Party and released here, 56 per cent of the people said their economic condition had worsened over the past one year and 65 per cent said they felt less secure today. Another interesting finding of the survey is that a majority of respondents were opposed to a deal between President Pervez Musharraf and Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto. The poll was conducted between August 29 and September 13 and the randomly selected sample consisted of 4,009 men and women from 256 rural and 144 urban areas of 60 districts in the four provinces. 200 miscreants killed in North Waziristan: DG ISPR

CNews MIR ALI: The Inter-Services Public Relations director general Major-General Waheed Arshad claimed that some 200 people had been killed in the recent operation in the militancy-haunted tribal region, adding that all those killed in the assault were “terrorists”. The top military spokesman went on to say that no air strike was launched against the militants since Tuesday afternoon. Maj-Gen Waheed confirmed that 48 soldiers had been killed while 20 sustained injuries during the recent operations. He also denied any kind of ceasefire between the militants and security forces.

ISLAMABAD: President and supreme commander of armed forces General Pervez Musharraf has promoted Lt Gen Ishfaq Pervez Kiani and Lt Gen Tariq Majeed to the rank of general and general Ishfaq Pervez Kiani has been appointed new army chief who will continue to perform the duties of vice chief of army staff till general Pervez Musharraf relinquishes post of army chief.
