iPhone 5 and iPad hitting China in December, Apple confirms

CNETAnalysis: The iPhone 5 , latest iPad , and iPad mini are coming to China. Apple announced this morning its mobile and tablets will go on sale in China in just a few days. The iPad mini and Retina display-toting iPad will hit shelves on December 7, with the iPhone 5 following a week later on December 14. The downside? It’s the Wi-Fi-only versions of the iPad and iPad mini. So anyone in China looking forward to getting online on an Apple tablet while out and about will have to hope the cellular models make it there at some point. Mr Operator There’s no word which operators will be offering the iPhone 5. We’ve contacted Apple and will update this story if we hear back. Previous rumours said China’s biggest network, China Mobile, wouldn’t be offering the handset. Which would be a bit of a blow for Apple, considering the network has around 700 million mobile subscribers. But the second and third biggest operators, China Unicom and China Telecom respectiv

PPP, ANP, JI back fresh delimitation of Karachi

Reported by Maryum Razzaq Staff Report KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have agreed to fresh delimitation of Karachi, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) demanded the exercise for the whole country, SAMAA reports. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), in its bid to take on board all stakeholders in the city, is holding meetings with political parties to lend ear to their reservations in connection with the proposed fresh delimitation of the metropolis’ constituencies. Election Commission’s Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan held meetings with delegations of PPP, ANP, JI and MQM at the ECP’s provincial office. After the meeting, MQM’s Raza Haroon said that his party has sought court order from the ECP which was not available. In the absence of any written document no discussion could take place, he stated and added that the ECP Secretary has also agreed with us. Raza said delimitation should be done in th

Week in Tech: Big numbers and little wonders: from silly Windows talk to the Wii Mini

CNETAnalysis: Windows 8 has been getting a bit of a rough ride lately, and even Microsoft’s friends have been at it: Asus’s chief financial officer, David Chang, told reporters that “demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now”. That’s not what Steve Ballmer says: according to him, Windows 8 is doing enormous numbers. By enormous, we really do mean enormous: Windows 8 has sold 40 million licences in just one month, and upgrade sales are higher than they were for Windows 7 . Not only that, but Steve Ballmer says that Windows Phone sales are four times higher than they were last year , that there are more than 1,500 different Windows 8 PCs, and that the Windows Phone Store has more than 120,000 apps. And that’s numberwang! Hold your horses, says our columnist Gary Marshall: what do these numbers actually mean? Windows Phone sales may be four times larger, but four times larger than what? “If you ask Steve Ballmer for actual figures, he gets all sh

Khawaja gets chance to audition for Ponting’s spot

Reported by Maryum Razzaq SYDNEY: Usman Khawaja will have an opportunity to audition for Ricky Ponting’s spot in the test team after the left-hander was named captain of the Australia Chairman’s XI to take on Sri Lanka in Canberra next week. Former captain Ponting on Thursday said he would be calling time on his glittering 17-year career after this week’s third test against South Africa. Left-handed batsman Khawaja, 25, who made his test debut for the injured Ponting in the Ashes test in Sydney in January 2011, will lead the side in the only warm-up game for the visitors before the three-test series kicks off in Hobart on Dec. 14. The Pakistan-born batsman averages 39 from six tests matches and is a contender for the number four batting spot in the Australian team, currently held by Ponting. “It is a talented team that has an ideal mix of youth and experience,” national selector John Inverarity said in a statement on Friday. “Usman Khawaja has been nominated as

Windows 8 Pro Surface furnished with half the battery life of RT version

CNETAnalysis: The divide between the Surface RT and Surface with Windows 8 Pro got a little bit bigger this afternoon as Microsoft revealed via tweet that the latter has about half the battery life of the RT variant. Answering a prompt for comments on the tab (due in January) battery longevity, the @Surface twitter account offered this response : “@shahroom Hey Shahroom, #Surface pro will have approximately half the batter sic life of Surface RT.” This could come as troubling news to those expecting the battery life of the Surface RT, which TechRadar found exceeded expectations , putting it among “some of the longest-lasting tablets money can buy.” Uh-oh Our test found the Surface RT lasted 7.5 hours when a 1080p WMV video was hooked into the built-in app that ships with the slate, giving it two hours more run time than the iPad 3 . That puts the Windows 8 Pro version at around 3.75 hours…perhaps a day’s worth of minimal use. According to the Surface sp

Xbox 720 reveal timing under consideration

Reported by Maryum Razzaq CNews World It looks like Microsoft are definitely pressing forward with their plans to debut a next generation Xbox ’720′ console towards the end of 2013. We have again had a semi-confirmation on this, with Microsoft now thought to be in the decision process of where to actually announce their new console to the world – E3 2013, or at a separate event later on in the year? After the monumental Xbox 720 ‘Fortaleza’ leak which the majority of gamers managed to see before it was pulled by Microsoft, it’s fair to say that Microsoft cannot keep their new Xbox console under wraps for much longer. Rumors are continuing to suggest that the new console is going to support exciting features such as augmented reality glasses, Kinect 2.0 and now reputable publications like Bloomberg have now decided to chime in on the Xbox 720 bandwagon as well. They have published a new report , confirming that the next Xbox console is indeed on the way in 2013, in l

iTunes 11 adds camera-enabled gift card redemption

CNETAnalysis: After what seemed like an eternity waiting for iTunes 11 to finally arrive, on Thursday Apple finally released the latest version of its popular music tuner. Featuring a slew of new changes and upgrades like iCloud and Facebook integration and a sleeker user interface, iTunes 11 is being billed as completely redesigned and newly remodeled. Not all of the updates are cosmetic though, as Apple has included some new functionality to make iTunes 11 even easier to use. Case in point, the all-new ability to photograph an iTunes gift card in order to redeem the code. Picture this Instead of having to type in cumbersome 16-digit codes typically found on the back of iTunes gift cards, users who’ve upgraded to iTunes 11 will be able to use the computer’s camera to snap a picture of the code. Once that’s done, the card is redeemed, and the money is transferred to the person’s iTunes account. The 16-digit code can still be manually typed in, and d

Breaking: Apple’s iTunes 11 now available for download

CNETAnalysis: Apple’s new iTunes 11 is finally ready for download. Apple made the announcement via its iTunes page Thursday, confirming an earlier report that the music would indeed rain down on us in a matter of hours. The new tune turner was due out before the end of the month, and the Nov. 29 seems to be just about as close to the end as Cupertino could cut it. Originally slated for an October release, Apple held off on breaking out the new ‘Tunes to “get it right.” It looks like the fruity folk finally got the service where it needed to be. New look, new feel Apple is calling iTunes 11 “a redesigned player,” something we’ve never seen or used before. New library views that facilitate smarter, more intuitive searches and a new MiniPlayer that’s jammed with more features are part of the package. The update also features expanded views for more in depth searches (want to know every song on an album?), preview history to help users return to previou

Lahore High Court upholds CCI decision to construct Kala Bagh Dam

The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Umar Atta Bandial, issued decree on petition filed for construction of Kala Bagh Dam. The court stated in its verdict this day that the Council of Common Interest (CCI) had approved construction of Kala Bagh Dam in 1991 and all four provinces also signed an agreement over water distribution truce. iOS 6 Maps without Google keeping users on iOS 5

CNET Analysis: It appears that Google are still putting the final touches on their highly anticipated Google Maps app for iOS 6 – the app that will be the savior of many iOS users it seems. Apple is currently hard at work on desperately improving their own iOS 6 Maps application, but a good portion of consumers are still running iOS 5 on their devices, purely due to the poor performance of Apple’s Maps on iOS 6. We told you almost two weeks ago, that Google were apparently in the final stage of getting their iOS 6 Maps onto the App Store ready for the anxious approval process, that will needed before the app is available for public download. We haven’t heard any progress from Google though since then, which means that the app may already be on the waiting list, with Apple probably busy deciding whether or not they want a rival mapping app to overwrite customer preference to their own in-house app on iOS6. A recent report published by Bloomberg, suggests t
