In Depth: Why the future of TV is gesture controlled

CNETAnalysis: Beyond the remote control: using gestures Who needs buttons and onscreen menus when our hands and feet lay idle? It was the Nintendo Wii that first got us moving, before augmented reality apps and games-stuffed smartphones had us waving them in a ridiculous figure-of-eight, but so far the humble television has remained stoically still. As the dust settles on CES 2012 that’s all set to change, with the big TV brands revealing in Las Vegas that motion sensors will be embedded in upcoming smart TVs of the very near future. The rise of new two-way IPTV services on both smart TVs and set top boxes looks set to bring not just point-and-click Wii-style remotes, but gesture recognition to control web surfing, app-based games, and to navigate TV schedules. Smart TVs already exist, of course, but the jury is out on exactly how clever they really are. Many TVs can be networked, though the viewing of videos on YouTube and BBC iPlayer, perhaps with a virtual remote app on a smartpho…

AMD Radeon HD 7950 launched at last

CNETAnalysis: AMD has finally released its Radeon HD 7950 graphics card to the world, the second tier of the manufacturer’s Southern Islands/AMD HD 7000 series cards. Was it worth the wait? Well you will be pleased to know that yes it was…and then some. This new graphics card is based on the same 28nm Graphics Core Next GPU as the AMD Radeon HD 7970 , code-named Tahiti. This Tahiti Pro is ever so slightly cut down compared to the HD 7970′s Tahiti XT, but the disparity in performance is mostly down to the lower core clockspeed. The AMD Radeon HD 7950 is clocked at a fairly conservative 800MHz compared to the HD 7970′s 925MHz. We say conservative as the Tahiti Pro GPU, from all the cards we’ve seen, is more than capable of topping the 1GHz mark. So it’s a bit of a shame that we haven’t seen a HD 7000 series card hitting the 1GHz core clock speed out of the box. Though there are rumours a certain Taiwanese graphics card manufacturer may be releasing an overclocked Radeon HD 7950 with th…

In Depth: Best free editing software: 15 on test

CNETAnalysis: Best free graphics editing software It’s very easy to build up a custom collection of media files; take a few digital photos, shoot a movie or two on your mobile phone, download a little music, and your PC will be packed with files in no time at all. Processing these files afterwards, though, is a little more challenging. What if some of your photos need work, your videos could benefit from a little trimming, maybe your audio files need an edit or two? You could opt for a commercial solution, of course. But this could be expensive – the best image and video editors in particular come with a sizeable price tag – and may also be overkill for what you need. A simpler solution might be to opt for a free media editor. There are a wide range available, from straightforward beginner-friendly tools which can handle the basics, to advanced, high-end applications which are up for almost any challenge. So which are the best? We pitched fifteen top names against each other – 5 grap…
