Opinion: Is AMD’s new plan to make ARM-based processors a big deal?

CNETAnalysis: Given AMD’s recent struggles , it’s not a huge surprise. But is AMD’s announcement that it intends to produce full-on server chips based on ARM rather than x86 technology a big deal? Symbolically, it feels fairly epic. Momentum away from Intel’s x86 instruction set and towards ARM processors seems inexorable. It’s driven largely by the explosion in ultraportable computing, of course. That’s a market segment dominated by ARM compatible processors and one that Intel has conspicuously failed to crack. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s ARM-compatible Windows RT operating system has blown apart the traditional Wintel alliance of x86 chips and Microsoft software platforms. In that context, an announcement that the only other major maker of x86 chips is planning on making ARM chips certainly feels like a major turning point. Low-power processors That’s especially true when you consider that AMD has its own low-power x86 core in the form of Bobcat, soon to b

Wii U praised over hardcore adoption

Reported by Maryum Razzaq CNews World We have seen plenty of criticism directed at the Wii U in recent weeks, some of it fair but probably most of unjustified. This week, it’s nice to bring you a positive spin on Nintendo’s upcoming console, with one source praising the system and Nintendo’s efforts in attempting to win back some of their hardcore audience that they perhaps lost with the first Wii. You may remember a recent backlash against the Wii U over the GamePad’s lack of support for voice chat using the built in microphone. Consumers who want to play FPS games on the Wii U with voice chat will instead have to plug a third-party headset into the GamePad’s included jack, even if you opt to play using the Pro Controller accessory. While that is a debatable decision from Nintendo, Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford has actually praised Nintendo’s touchscreen GamePad by stating in a recent interview that the GamePad is ”the best controller Nintendo has ever

Nexus 4 Vs iPhone 5 specs visual

CNET Analysis: Now that the LG Nexus 4 has been officially outed by Google , many consumers will inevitably be making the decision in their heads on which handset is better between Google’s new effort and the iPhone 5, which is still considered to be the benchmark in the smartphone market. As with previous Nexus devices, there is plenty of interest in the upcoming handset, not only because it will ship with the latest version of Android Jelly Bean (4.2), but also because the hardware specifications on paper appear to be very promising indeed and arguably better than what Apple can currently offer consumers with the iPhone 5. For starters, the processor is a essential factor in any decision making over a new smartphone and you’ll be pleased to hear that the Nexus 4 has been equipped with a brand spanking new quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, offering 1.5Ghz per core. In comparison, the iPhone 5 still only ships with a dual-core based A6 processor although

Launch day supply of iPad 4 already sold out

CNETAnalysis: The frenzy over Apple products doesn’t seem to be slowing anytime soon as it appears Apple has sold out of the launch day stock of the iPad 4 . Despite surveys relating consumer outrage at the announcement of a new tablet so soon after the iPad 3 was released, pre-release sales of the iPad 4 indicate customers are just as hungry for the new tech as they were the last time around. It only took four days for the iPad 4 launch stock to sell out, and customers will now have to wait a bit beyond this Friday to get one if they haven’t ordered already. Based on the iPad 4 sales page on Apple’s website, a second wave won’t be available to ship for at least one more week. Can’t stop, won’t stop The iPad4 is just the latest iOS device Apple has had trouble keeping in stock in time for its debut. The iPhone 5 sold out in about an hour , prompting shipping delays for subsequent shipments to last multiple weeks. Similarly, the white and silver iPad Min

Updated: Apple revenue at $36B last quarter, 26.9 million iPhones sold

CNETAnalysis: Apple revealed its fiscal year 2012 fourth quarter earnings results Thursday, covering the 3-month period ending Sept. 29. The company, which hosted an investor call after the markets closed, posted quarterly revenue of $36 billion for a net profit of $8.2 billion. During the same time a year ago, Apple posted $28.3 billion in revenue and a net profit of $6.6 billion. International sales accounted for 60 percent of the company’s quarterly revenue. iPhone leads the charge Last quarter alone, Apple sold 26.9 million iPhones, a 58 percent unit growth from the same time last year. The iPhone 5 demand continues to outstrip supply, said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple CFO, and the company is moving to fill customer need. The phone’s figures were only counted for nine days during the quarter, bleeding expectations for its sales into the next fiscal reporting period. While the company mentioned its iOS 6 launch, it said work hasn’t stopped on fixing

Updated: Google Nexus 10 release date, price and specifications

CNETAnalysis: Google Nexus 10 tablet: all the details The Nexus 7 has been an enormous success for Google, so it’s not a great surprise that Google has decided to go after the ten-inch tablet market too. What is a surprise, though, is the specification: while the Nexus 10 tablet is significantly cheaper than an iPad 4 , it beats Apple’s specification in several key areas – and we don’t mean obscure, under-the-hood stuff you’ll never notice, either. Could the Nexus 10 be the tablet that finally does to Apple what so many other Android tablets tried and failed to do? Google Nexus 10 tablet: US price and release date In the US, the Nexus 10 is $399 for the 16GB version and $499 for the 32GB model, which works out as $100 less than the equivalent iPad. The US release date is 13th November. Google Nexus 10 tablet: UK price and release date The Nexus 10 starts at just £319 for the 16GB version and £389 for the 32GB, which means the basic model is a good £80 c

In Depth: Android 4.2 release date, news and features

CNETAnalysis: As ever Google is hard at work making Android the best that it can be and the next step in that evolution is Android 4.2. Despite being a new version it’s keeping the ” Jelly Bean ” moniker – perhaps to emphasize the fact that it’s more a small update than a massive overhaul. There are still things to get excited about, though. Photo Sphere First up is “Photo Sphere.” It’s an addition to the camera app that’s clearly been heavily inspired by the company’s own “Street View” service. Essentially, it lets you move around while taking photos – look up and down and pan and it will capture everything in a series of connected images, right up to creating a full 360-degree panorama. Much like how you can look around in street view – just on a smaller scale. “Photo Sphere” images are saved as JPEGS and you’re not limited to viewing them on your Android device. You can view them on computers, email them or post them to Google+ (and presumably other

GTA V PC alienation claims tests loyalty

Reported by Maryum Razzaq CNews World The debate on whether the recent GTA V leaked posters were real or not is still very much up in the air. What we didn’t go into detail on at the time though was the revelation that GTA 5 may only be coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 at launch, meaning that PC users could be set to miss out once again. To recap for those that haven’t seen the poster yet – take a another look here . These posters look like official promotional material for GTA 5 and despite the fact that they haven’t been confirmed by Rockstar yet, various gaming publications are already treating the posters as official information, leaked before Rockstar had the chance to. The two key pieces of information are the fact that only Xbox 360 and PS3 are mentioned, but also the now-strong possibility that Grand Theft Auto 5 is going to be a Spring 2013 release as well, ruling out any slim chance that fans had of the game coming out before Christmas in 2012. Pietersen back for England in Tuesday’s warmup game

Reported by Maryum Razzaq LONDON: Kevin Pietersen’s England exile following a controversial text-message row will end on Tuesday when he plays against India A in a three-day match. The flamboyant middle-order batsman was dropped for the third and final test against South Africa at Lord’s in August after he admitted sending provocative texts to the opposition. “Kevin will play tomorrow and bat at number four,” England coach Andy Flower told reporters in Mumbai on Monday. Pietersen had been left out of the touring party but earlier this month he was added to the squad following meetings with Flower, captain Alastair Cook and other senior players and members of the management team. His return will boost England, who lost their world number one test status to South Africa in August, in their quest to win a test series in India for the first time since 1985. “I spoke to KP this morning and he is desperate to get going and we are desperate to have him back,” said Cook
