Election 2010: First hung parliament in UK for decades

Britain has its first hung parliament since 1974, with the Conservatives as the largest party. The Tories have won 290 seats so far but can not now reach the 326 needed to win an overall majority. Leader David Cameron said Labour had "lost its mandate to govern". Gordon Brown, whose party has 247 seats, has returned to Downing Street with aides. Both may now turn to Nick Clegg's Lib Dems, who have so far won 51 seats, to try to form a coalition government. The BBC projection suggests David Cameron's Conservatives will have 306 seats. If there are 10 Unionists elected in Northern Ireland then Mr Cameron might be able to command 316 - probably still slightly too few for him to be sure of winning a Queen's Speech. But Labour and the Lib Dems together would have 317 seats, according to the BBC figures, which even with three SDLP MPs would still leave them at 320 - again a few votes short of a majority In other election night news: * Northern Ireland'...

How to vote in a general election

If you are voting in person, go to your allocated voting station between 7am and 10pm on election day. Your polling card may help administration. When you arrive, staff will take your details and cross off your name on their checklist. In Northern Ireland, staff will also ask for a form of photographic ID. You will be given a ballot paper listing candidates and parties. It will be printed on special paper or feature an official mark and numbered to combat fraud. Take the ballot paper to one of the booths, which are screened to ensure secrecy. Put an X in the box next to the name of the person you want to vote for. If you mark any more boxes, your paper will be invalid. Fold the ballot paper so others cannot see your choice and post it in the ballot box.

ITV, evidently inspired by Avatar, has prepared a "bespoke virtual studio" with an interactive holographic wall and a "3D House of Commons". The CNews simply promises "the greatest-ever swingometer" – which it will need to be, if it's to demonstrate clearly the complex dynamics of three-directional swing that seems likely to dominate the night.
