CNews ISLAMABAD: Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Kanwar Mohammed Dilshad Monday said that Sindh was the province where ECP offices received the most damage.Talking to Geo News, Secretary ECP said the prevalent circumstances upset election schedule, as the electoral rolls have been torched to ashes with a lot of damage received by the ECP offices in Sindh.Commenting on the possibility of elections postponement, Kanwar Mohammed Dilshad maintained that the final decision would be made only after the receipt of reports from all the provinces, as the ground realities could not be overlooked.There had not been any backup for several accessories and electoral apparatus, which were destroyed in the recent tumultuous developments in Sindh.

Riots broke out almost immediately and police and mortuary officials said at least 75 people were killed in cities in western Kenya overnight and a further 48 in Nairobi's massive slums. Around 53 people were killed in Kisumu, Kenya's third city. Police clamped a day-time curfew on the city, with an order to shoot violators. Corps Commander Karachi visits Hyderabad
CNews HYDERABAD: Corps Commander Karachi Lt. Gen. Ahsan Azhar Hayat Monday visited Hyderabad to inspect law and order situation in the city. According to ISPR, a briefing held to inform the corps commander about the measures taken by the military for restoration of law and order in the city.“The troops evacuated 3000 railway passengers stranded after Dec. 27-tragedy at Shahdadpur in Awam Express and Hazara Express. They were provided food, medicines and milk for children.”Later, the passengers were sent to Karachi and Hyderabad with military security. All key highways and bridges were blocked but the soldiers removed the barriers and opened the bridges and highways for traffic, the corps commander was briefed.
PPP to be run following Benazir’s guidelines: Amin Fahim
CNews SUKKUR: Pakistan Peoples Party’s central leader and prime ministerial candidate Makhdoom Amin Fahim Monday said the party will be run according to the guidelines of Benazir Bhutto.Talking to the party leaders here before leaving for Islamabad, Amin Fahim said the Peoples Party would remain the symbol of federation as aspired by the martyred leader Benazir Bhutto. He said the party would contest elections vigorously and leave no avenue open for the opponents to flee for opening of an era of real democracy in the country. Amin Fahim said the blood of Benazir Bhutto would bring about the revolution of real democracy and elimination of poverty, ignorance, price hike and lawlessness in Pakistan. He urged the local party leadership to gear up preparations for the election. He also met with Jamat Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed at the airport lobby and exchanged views over the matters of mutual interest.

Halepota directs ensuring water supply to tail-end areas
CNews KARACHI: Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (retd) Abdul Qadir Halepota has directed irrigation department to ensure supply of water to growers of tail-end areas. He also called for immediate de-siltation of the Rohri Canal, saying the irrigation water do not reach to the growers of tail-end areas due to accumulation of silt in the canal. This he said while presiding over a joint meeting of growers and secretary irrigation at chief minister's house here on Monday. He observed that Sindh is an agriculture province and its economy relies on it, adding British rulers provided the province with best irrigation system of the world. Halepota viewed that the Sindh province would get benefit if this system was looked after in a better manner. He added that millions of acres of land get irrigated through Rohri Canal and its cleaning should be made to ensure provision of water to tail-end growers. The caretaker chief minister said more doors should be installed at regulators of sub-canals of Rahri Canal, besides de-siltation. Rs 2500 million have been allocated for cleaning of the canal that should be utilized in a proper manner, he added.
Miscreants force shops closure in parts of Karachi
CNews KARACHI: Angry persons forced closure of shops at M.A. Jinnah Road and adjoining areas on Monday causing temporary suspension of traffic flow.The city had opened Monday and normalcy returned after 3-days of closure in the aftermath of assassination of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto. The City Monday witnessed normal traffic flow with most markets and shops reopening. Police started patrolling in the affected areas to bring situation under control.
Sharif calls for elections to be held as scheduled on Jan. 8
CNews LAHORE: Opposition leader Nawaz Sharif said Monday that Pakistan's parliamentary elections should be held Jan. 8 as scheduled despite the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. He also said Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf should resign and be replaced by a national unity government. “He is a one-man calamity. He is responsible for all the troubles in Pakistan. The country is burning,'' he said. Sharif spoke as it began to appear that the government would delay the parliamentary election, which had been touted as a crucial landmark in restoring democracy to this nuclear-armed country. “No one among us wants elections to go beyond Jan. 8,'' Sharif told a news conference in Lahore. The former prime minister accused Musharraf of trying to escape from participating in the election and using the Election Commission as a tool for delaying the poll. Sharif said that if he is elected as prime minister he would not work with Musharraf, and he called on the international community to withdraw its support for the former army chief who seized power in a1999 coup that overthrew Sharif's government. “The United States should see that Musharraf have not limited or curbed terrorism. In fact terrorism is now stronger than ever before with more sinister aspects,'' he said. “The international community should not antagonize the people of Pakistan for the sake of one man. It should support democracy. It should support political parties that are farsighted and pragmatic and can play a constructive role in putting Pakistan on a path of moderation,'' he said. ``With Musharraf in power, Pakistan does not have a future.''
