High-ups meeting today to discuss Karachi blasts

CNews KARACHI: A high-level meeting is due today at Chief Minister House to review the law and order situation in the province in post Karachi blasts scenario.Sindh CM Syed Qaim Ali Shah would chair the meeting that would be attended by the high-ups of provincial government and law enforcement agencies.Meanwhile, Sindh police on Tuesday started its probe into a string of blasts which killed two persons and wounded 37 in Karachi, the second deadly attack in as many days to hit the frontline state in the US "war on terror".Five men were being questioned on Tuesday after they were arrested in connection with the blasts, said Babar Khattak, the police chief of Sindh province."We have detained five people from different parts of the city after our investigators got some leads about their involvement in the blasts," Khattak told reporters."We cannot disclose to which group they belong or what we have recovered from them," he said.Police said that the blasts were likely to be an attempt to stir up ethnic tensions in the troubled city because most happened in areas populated by Pashtuns, who originally hail from the northwestern frontier with Afghanistan.Sindh CM has also announced to suspend all concerned TPOs, DSPs and SHOs of the areas, where the blasts were occurred yesterday (Monday).While talking to newsmen at his residence on Monday night, Shah announced to constitute an inquiry committee, comprising DIG Aleem Jafferri and AD Khowaja, to probe the blasts and sought the report the committee within two days. He also announced Rs 200,000 compensation for each dead and Rs 50,000 for each injured.He informed the mediamen that some reports about an exchange of firing on Monday between different persons of communities have also been received.He said according to reports two persons have died while 45 received injuries in the blasts. However, the nature of the blasts and the culprits will be known after the investigation, he added.Syed Qaim Ali Shah said he has also talked to the Sindh Governor, President of Awami National Party (ANP), as well as leaders of other parties to avert such incidents in future.He said the police and rangers have been deployed at different spots and efforts will be made to thwart any untoward incident.
