CNews ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman Monday said the resignation of Pervez Musharraf is a triumph for democracy and vindication of nation’s determined stand for a civilian political order. “He (Musharraf) had become a liability for the nation because of his anti-democratic credentials,” she said while commenting on the resignation of Pervez Musharraf.
The Minister said, “The eight years of his rule have been fraught with gross constitutional violations and acts of political divisiveness, which had not only put democracy at stake but also created serious economic and security challenges for the country.
Even though, Sherry Rehman said this resignation was due on February 18, it has come today, reinforcing the public will and strengthening the coalition government’s legitimate struggle to put democracy on track in the country.
“It also echoes Mohtarma Shaheed’s mantra that democracy is the best revenge. Our success is also a tribute to all those who gave their lives for a return to democracy,” she added.
The Minister said people of Pakistan had paid a heavy price while suffering one-man rule, adding that “it was General Musharraf’s reluctance to clear the way for a civilian rule that triggered political disorder in the country.
She said PPP leader Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto lost her life to the political struggle to fight the crisis created by his illegitimate hold on power.
Ms. Rehman said Musharraf’s resignation is the result of coalition government’s determination to move towards a complete transition to democracy and added in the last week, all four provincial assemblies have passed resolutions with clear majority calling for his impeachment.
“This reflects the elected government’s understanding of the public opinion and its willingness to take responsibility for creating a political system that caters to the public’s democratic aspirations, Sherry Rehman said.”
Sherry Rehman pointed out that immediately after the resignation the rupee registered a sharp rise against the dollar while Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) rose by nearly 500 points. “This is an indication of the confidence that economic and financial institutions have on our government and their support for strengthening democracy in Pakistan,” she added.
Ms Rehman said Musharraf’s economic management and his support for political factions that misappropriated national assets for personal benefits is directly responsible for the economic mess that the government has inherited and is trying to fix.
She said, “The current challenges have exposed the weak foundations that the economy was set on by the Musharraf regime. All his so-called achievements gloss over the harsh economic realities that his policies have yielded which are high incidence of poverty, lack of investment in critical sectors including energy infrastructure, food shortage and high inflation.”
The Minister said the government is determined to fix problems created by Musharraf’s regime keeping in line with its public mandate.
“While the nation hails his resignation, this is a moment to reflect on the challenges ahead as we move towards an order of parliamentary supremacy,” she said and added his resignation clears the way for our government to get on with its governance agenda of providing to the people basic social services, economic opportunities, political security and law and order.
