President Pervez Musharraf resigns

CNews ISLAMABAD: President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has announced to resign from his office, saying that no charge-sheet can stand against him as he is sure that not a single charge against him can be proved.Addressing the nation here Monday, he said said that when he taken over the economy was at the verge of collapse.He said during his government the country has faced so many challenges and crisis in last nine years and overcame all crises successfully.He said declaring the present economic crisis result of the past eight years' policies is misconception and a betrayal with the government.The president said his government added 14000 megawatt to the national grid.President Musharraf said that the economy was flourishing in Dec. 2007 and the GDP was increasing by 60 percent per annum, while the revenue collection was reached to one trillion rupees.Earlier, presidential spokesman Rashid Qureshi has said that President Pervez Musharraf will address the nation at 1:00 pm today.According to the sources the president would brief the nation about the policies of his government. He is likely to announce his resignation in the address to the nation.The President has been advised to quit his office and not use the President’s powers under Article 58-2 B, the sources added.Moreover, security high alert has been declared in and around Benazir International Airport in Islamabad.Muslim League (Q) sources have indicated the possibility of use of the Article 58-2 B of the constitution by the president before his quitting the office. However, another source of the party has said that the president would not use his powers under Article 58-2 B to dissolve the assemblies.The staff of the official television and radio has been called at the President's camp office in Rawalpindi for his address to the nation.President Pervez Musharraf has met with the members of his personal staff.According to the sources, the president and the government have reached to an understanding over some issues.Rawalpindi lawyers have meanwhile, announced to cordon off the President House and the Islamabad airport and the lawyers rallies have left for the President House and the airport from the Rawalpindi District Bar.Meanwhile, Presidential aide Tariq Aziz has left for London. According to a report his baggage was earlier dispatched to his family in London.
