Sukkur Barrage witnessing highest flood tide

Awaz Apni SUKKUR: The high flood at the Guddu Barrage inundated dozens of villages in Ghotki, Shikarpur and Kashmore districts on Sunday and the floodwater has hit here to sustain pressure at Qadirpur Lope in Ghotki, Sarhad and Obauro areas of Sukkur division.

The Sukkur Barrage is witnessing a highest flood tide with water level 11,15365 cusecs. Flood water entered Goth Sommer Mallah at Jamshed Lope Bund and Ali Wahan.

Over 30,000 people are feared to get affected by the potential flooding at Nusrat Bund, Aqil Agani Bund Puranaabad areas of Larkana.

However, over 40,000 people have been evacuated to safer places in Khairpur, Shikarpur and Ghotki districts. Dozens of villages in Ghotki district have been submerged in the floodwater.

Meanwhile, PPP MPA Rai Naz Bozdar said that the irrigation officials were providing wrong measurements about the water level of the approaching flood.

She said that at Sehrish Nagar embankment, the water level in Indus was continuously rising and the flood level at Guddu Barrage was increasing.

The torrential rains are hampering the relief work and all the helicopters meant for dropping food supplies to the flood affected people have been grounded and are waiting for the weather to clear up.

Pakistani navy boats travelled along kilometres of flood waters on Sunday to rescue people stranded in a disaster that has angered many over the government's response.

The ongoing flood has affected 19 districts of Sindh province directly or indirectly, some of which have been declared sensitive, said Sindh Irrigation Secretary during a briefing given to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on the occasion of his visit to Sukkur Barrage on Sunday.

On arrival at the Barrage the Prime Minister reviewed the flood situation. The PM on Sunday undertook an aerial view of the ravages caused by the flood when he flew in a helicopter from Sukkur Barrage to Gudu Barrage.

The Prime Minister also viewed the areas of Tori in Kandhkot besides Ghouspur and other areas.

The worst floods in 80 years have killed over 1,600 people, left two million homeless, washed away crops and farm animals and overwhelmed the civilian government.

In Depth: Could robots be the writers of the future?

CNETAnalysis: It might be concerned with aliens, outer space and dimensional jumping for now, but ‘sci-fi’ might have to be redefined if the latest advances in automated writing continue apace. Software that can construct sentences, analyse data and even put a ‘spin’ on a news story are threatening to make the newsdesk and the author’s writing room very different places. The end for journalists? Journalism isn’t complicated. The popularity of online news stories can be tracked – and therefore the importance of news easily ranked – while almost everything is written using the inverted pyramid structure . Since automated writing software can already do most of that, are we looking at the last generation of human journalists? Narrative Science’s Quill is the leading automated writing software title. It transforms structured data into readable, plain English stories that are identical to those written by humans, ...
