WWDC 2011 iOS 5 expectations: upgrades and improvements

June 6-10 is important to those who not only have a Mac, but an iOS device as well because it is when WWDC 2011 takes place, and will be when our iOS 5 expectations are met. Well we say that, but we have to wait and see what kind of upgrade and improvements will be offered in this latest mobile operating system.
We know that one item of discussion will be missing this June, and that is the new iPhone, although we do expect Steve Jobs to give the device a brief mention – maybe we’ll learn if it is to be called the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5? We all have our very own wishlist of features we would most like to see on iOS 5, and we are no different.
iOS has been struggling of late to be able to keep up with the constant attack of Android, and one area of weakness is notifications. Apple seems to be too far behind not only Google, but also HP’s webOS and even RIM’s Blackberry OS. It would be stupid to presume that Apple will not address this issue.
How many times have you gone to send a text, only to realize that you are sending it to the wrong person? You could be texting something innocent, but there are times when that SMS could get you in a whole load of trouble. Apple needs to be aware of this and offer a feature that will allow you to cancel a text.
The first thing that you see when you turn your iPhone on is the Home Screen, so why does it all feel a little too old now? iOS 4 offered us a vast improvement, but iOS 5 needs to take this a step further and make it fresh and exciting. Voice Control is the final feature that we would like to see improved. The service is already good, but Apple could do so much more. We would like to see the ability to talk a text, notes or an email. We know that the technology is there, and this would be an ideal feature to cater for not only the consumer but enterprise users as well.
These are just a handful of features and improvements that we would like to see on iOS 5, and we only have three weeks for WWDC 2011 to learn if any of this will be included.
What features would you most love to see in the next version of iOS?

In Depth: Could robots be the writers of the future?

CNETAnalysis: It might be concerned with aliens, outer space and dimensional jumping for now, but ‘sci-fi’ might have to be redefined if the latest advances in automated writing continue apace. Software that can construct sentences, analyse data and even put a ‘spin’ on a news story are threatening to make the newsdesk and the author’s writing room very different places. The end for journalists? Journalism isn’t complicated. The popularity of online news stories can be tracked – and therefore the importance of news easily ranked – while almost everything is written using the inverted pyramid structure . Since automated writing software can already do most of that, are we looking at the last generation of human journalists? Narrative Science’s Quill is the leading automated writing software title. It transforms structured data into readable, plain English stories that are identical to those written by humans, ...
