Microsoft reveals Xbox Live Summer of Arcade 2011 dates / prices

We have some pretty exciting news now for those of you that have been waiting to hear about the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade 2011 release schedule, as we’ve just received word that Microsoft has recently revealed both the dates and the prices of all five games. Previous Xbox Live Summer of Arcade campaigns have given us games such as Limbo, Geometry Wars 2 and Shadow Complex.
According to Martin Gaston over on the videogamer.comwebsite, this year’s Xbox Live Summer of Arcade campaign includes Bastion, From Dust, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Fruit Ninja Kinect and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. However, the game that is kicking it all off on July 20th is Supergiant Games’ action role-playing game Bastion, which features a dynamic narration and anime-inspired visuals.
VideoGamer.com actually declared the upcoming Bastion game – which will set gamers back 1200 Microsoft Points – as one of the Best of the E3 2011 event. The next Xbox Live Arcade title to be released is Ubisoft’s much-anticipated From Dust game, which sees players assume a god-like third-person perspective. The game is due to be released on July 27th, and will also cost 1200 Microsoft Points.
Meanwhile, Fuelcell Games’ Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet game – which has reportedly been in development since 2007 – is due to be launched on Xbox Live Arcade on August 3rd and is also priced up at 1200 Microsoft Points. The Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet game is set on an alien planet, and includes exploration elements similar to that of Castlevania and Metroid.
Those of you that enjoy playing the Fruit Ninja game on your mobile devices will be pleased to know that the Fruit Ninja Kinect game is due to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade on August 10th. This game can be downloaded for 800 Microsoft Points. Normally the player would slice through the fruit by swiping the touch screen of their mobile device, but this will be done with their arms and hands in the Kinect version.
The final game due to be released on August 17th is Signal Studios’ Toy Soldiers: Cold War, which is in fact a sequel to the hugely popular Toy Soldiers. The upcoming Toy Soldiers: Cold War game – which will set you back 1200 Microsoft Points – features a mixture of first-person shooting and strategy similar to that of the original, but comes with additional features and gameplay.
All five games will set you back 5600 Microsoft Points (£47.97 / $70.00 / €67.20), but if you do buy the lot then Microsoft will also throw in a free copy of the Crimson Alliance game when it arrives in September. Are you tempted by any of these Xbox Live Arcade games?

In Depth: Could robots be the writers of the future?

CNETAnalysis: It might be concerned with aliens, outer space and dimensional jumping for now, but ‘sci-fi’ might have to be redefined if the latest advances in automated writing continue apace. Software that can construct sentences, analyse data and even put a ‘spin’ on a news story are threatening to make the newsdesk and the author’s writing room very different places. The end for journalists? Journalism isn’t complicated. The popularity of online news stories can be tracked – and therefore the importance of news easily ranked – while almost everything is written using the inverted pyramid structure . Since automated writing software can already do most of that, are we looking at the last generation of human journalists? Narrative Science’s Quill is the leading automated writing software title. It transforms structured data into readable, plain English stories that are identical to those written by humans, ...
