ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan’s verdict against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani drew reaction from the ruling party and its supporters amid protest demonstrations in various cities, SAMAA reports.
Dozens of PPP workers gathered outside the court in Islamabad and shouted slogans against the Supreme Court after it found Gilani guilty of contempt for not implementing the SC orders in NRO implementation case.
Gilani was convicted for refusing to obey SC order to write to authorities in Switzerland asking them to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
“For reasons to be recorded later, the prime minister is found guilty of contempt for wilfully flouting the direction of the Supreme Court,” said Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk on Thursday who headed a seven member bench for the case hearing.
The PM was sentenced to be detained in the court until the hearing adjourned, and shortly afterwards emerged smiling and waving to supporters. He had faced a maximum sentence of six months in jail in the case, but still facing disqualification.
Protest demonstrations were also held after the ruling in Multan, Sialkot, Mirpurkhas and other cities, with PPP workers shouting slogans against the judiciary. SAMAA
